About

Our Goal

Since age 16, I’ve been called dishwasher, cook, waiter, host, front of the house manager, bar manager, and as of late, “hey bartender, pour me another…”

You could say I’ve held nearly every position in the restaurant business (short of general manager, executive chef, and owner). From burger joint to fine dining, I’ve served in them all. What can I say? I’m passionate about good food and I love people. Recently, I began thinking that it’s time to put this wealth of knowledge and experience in the restaurant industry to good use for myself, instead of everyone else.

Since moving to Durham and experiencing firsthand the impact that new restaurants have had on the success of the downtown revitalization campaign, I have decided that I want to be part of the movement. Rather than follow the traditional route of opening a full restaurant with all the risks and challenges that entails, my goal is to take my message and menu to the streets via a mobile restaurant.

In Durham, food trucks have been one of the most popular additions to the cityscape in recent years. In fact, the success of Durham food truckers has incited the legislatures of Raleigh, Hillsborough, and Chapel Hill to pass laws allowing food trucks to be enjoyed within their city limits. With this expansion of the food truck frontier, now is the perfect time to finally seize my dream of opening up my own mobile restaurant, but I can’t do that without the assistance of a few generous backers that believe in me. That’s where you come in. The startup costs of a food truck are significantly less than those of a brick-and-mortar restaurant. These costs include: the truck, a commissary to operate from, and funding for the initial supplies. The price of a food truck can range from $10k to $100k (depending on which bells and whistles you choose), but in my case, I will be starting from scratch. I recently purchased a step van from the Sanoca NC Volunteer Fire Department, and am now ready to get it fully outfitted and equipped by my friend George, owner of "Jack of All Trades". After getting the truck inspected, painted and stocked, Pork in the Road will be ready to hit the streets and bring home the bacon.

With permission from property managers/owners, I will be able to do business almost anywhere my truck will take me, including social centers such as RTP, UNC, Duke, NCCU, and NC State, and various downtown hotspots in Durham, Raleigh, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill. Pork in the Road will be available to hire for private event catering and will make regular appearances at local organized events.

The concept behind Pork in the Road is fairly self-explanatory, and there’s no better place for a pork-inspired menu than the second highest pork-producing state in the nation. There will be a few pork substitutes for our kosher friends out there, but rest assured, pig will find its way into most every recipe. What I’m asking of you is your sincere consideration of backing me and my business. Any donation you are willing to make will be greatly appreciated and will be compensated with "pork perks.” No contribution is too small, and every cent will be put towards opening Pork in the Road food truck and realizing my dream of becoming my own master.

Thanks

Over the past year I have had lots of friends help me out in various ways, and I wouldn't have been able to start this campaign without their generosity. Rob DiPatri, thanks a bunch for the work and time you took to help me with everything. Gross Ghost, a band in which Rob is a member, provided the music. I would also like thank Toriano Fredricks, who helped me out with one of my videos, and an awesome write up on his blog, "La Buena Vida". Make sure you stop by his site, and check some of the various things he's written about.

Risks and challenges

As a potential backer, you're probably wondering, "Aren't there a lot of food trucks in the Triangle that you'll be competing with?" And the answer is, while there are already 50+ mobile food units operating throughout the Triangle area, we don't view this so much as a challenge, but rather an opportunity to join forces with some very successful, like-minded business owners (many of whom I've worked with in various restaurants throughout my career). Thus far, we've experienced nothing but love and support from other food truck purveyors in the area. They've been cheering us on through Twitter, Facebook, and out in the streets. The Triangle mobile food unit scene is much more collaborative than competitive, and we're confident that our food will fill a niche that hasn't been met.
