About

The conditions are perfect, and you need to get out there. It's too far to carry your board, and your partner has the car!

If that sounds familiar, then Shore Ride will free your ride. Let Shore Ride take the stress and strain out of carrying your board to the water.

Attach Shore Ride to your SUP or kayak and either walk or cycle to the beach. Tow all your craft without having to purchase additional carriers.

You can leave your car at home, escape the traffic and discover those secret spots.

My mission is a simple one - I'm passionate about the ocean and anything that makes it easier for people to enjoy the sports they love. Anything that does that, I'm in!

I wrote a poem about how I feel about the ocean. We shot all the images in my surrounding area where I get to kitesurf, kayak and SUP.

Shore Ride makes it simple for you to get your board to the water. If you live close to the water and want to get there in a hassle-free way, then this product is for you.

No car.  No hassle.  Just you, your board and the water.

Shore Ride is a simple craft carrier that wraps around the top & bottom of your board or kayak and then tightens in the middle.

You then tighten the centre strap which keeps both the front and back section tight and snug.

You can either manually tow the board or attach to your bike; the choice is up to you.

Shore Ride also works well on other craft such as kayaks.

I wanted to build something that would last, something that uses the best materials available, otherwise what's the point? I tested a huge number of fabrics and foams and settled on the following.

Neoprene with Nylon Mesh Wrapping

For wrapping around your board we use neoprene, but not any old neoprene, this is the material you'll find in the high-end wetsuits - 100% chloroprene, and with a durable nylon mesh for additional strength and protection.

The Wheels

The wheels need to work well on the roads, kerbs and also the pebbly and sandy beaches we have in the UK. I tested both solid tyres and pneumatic and settled on pneumatic as it handles better on the bumps!

Foam Support Plate

The foam support plate both grips and protects the bottom of your board. I chose EPDM rubber for the material which is both robust and durable in and out of the water.

What's in the Box

Fit Shore Ride Together

Shore Ride is ready out of the box.  Simply take it out, add the wheels and attach the R-clips. Job done!

Shore Ride While in the Water

If I'll be returning to my launch spot when I'm finished on the water, I tend to lock my Shore Ride to my bike, bench or post.

If I'll be coming ashore at a different location, I carry my Shore Ride with me - either by storing it on my board or by placing it into my 35 litre dry bag.

Will the Shore Ride Work with My Board or Kayak?

The webbing underneath the board is 13ft long and so will carry boards up to 14ft.

The Shore Ride fits just under the bottom fin where the tail is at its smallest point. I've tested on boards and kayaks up to 430mm, and these works fine.

And just as an experiment, I tried Shore Ride on the largest canoe I could find.

I managed to get it to the river on my own by walking, but I wouldn't want to tow it on the back of a bike!

I moved to the coast five years ago and decided to take up paddleboarding. It’s an incredible sport that helps keep me fit and also gives me space when life is getting stressful.

I love the ocean, and I love making things. I wanted to create something that brought together these two parts of my world. After moving to the coast and seeing people struggling to carry their boards to the beach I decided to create a product to help them, and Shore Ride was born.

Initially, I created Shore Ride for myself, but after seeing others struggling with the same issue, I decided to turn it into a product.

I designed Shore Ride with the help from Rob Bye, a product design student from Brunel University. We met at an exhibition in London and shared a love of surfing and the ocean.

After conceiving the initial idea in March 2015, we created the initial drawings and mockups for how Shore Ride might look. We tested some different styles:

We then started work on making the first prototype.

Working with a local fashion designer allowed us to make fast design iterations.

The first prototype had many design flaws but provided a great platform for further development. After testing and getting feedback, we then created the second prototype seen in the image below:

The second design, as seen above, minimised the material and improved support in the required areas. The final design added a strap to the front to improve the overall fit to the nose of the board.

After building the second prototype, I set to work to create another 50 prototypes to test the market and get even more feedback.

I ordered the parts from around the world. I created some sections in China, but I created others, like the neoprene wrapping, in Sheffield.

Once all the parts arrived, I made the first 50 in my garage with help from my super talented brother-in-law and 6-year-old son.

I love spending time with my little boy, away from screens, just making something together. My little dude spent hours with a rubber mallet helping to build the wheels, no complaining, just me and him making a product together. It was magic.

I took Shore Ride to Paddle Round the Pier in July 2016, a local festival where I received incredible feedback and sold a fair few units. Three weeks after that and with a little help from Amazon I sold out of the original 50 prototypes I created.

From that point, I thought, let's turn this into something.

I’ve finally made it to Kickstarter after a couple of years of testing and prototyping. It's not been easy, but I'm happy with what I've created. However, the hard work isn't over - this is just the start!

I need your help to bring Shore Ride to life. Without you, I won't be able to make this happen.

The money raised through this Kickstarter campaign will help me to pay for tooling to create larger quantities, allowing me to make more Shore Rides and get the overall cost of each unit down to an affordable price.

Delivery

After you pre-order your Shore Ride I'll be able to get started on the manufacturing of the product. It'll take three months from that point, and I'll be delivering the first units at the end of November.

I've successfully started and founded multiple tech companies, including Wordtracker.com, Mailflowhq.com, Onboardhq.com.

I love the ocean, and I love making things. I wanted to create something that brought together these two parts of my world. After moving to the coast and seeing people struggling to carry their boards to the beach I decided to create a product to help them, and Shore Ride was born.

I used to make things at school through design and technology and created one of the first portable alcohol testers (don't ask me why a school kid was creating an alcohol tester!)

I lost my way a bit from designing products but found it again in the form of Shore Ride, hopefully, the first of many that connect my love of the ocean with making.

I’d like to say thanks to the following people for helping me get to where I am and for making Shore Ride happen.

My Amazing wife, Vicky, for her support in this project. Luca & Maya, the life sparkle in their eye keeps me motivated on a daily basis! Lee for helping me make all the prototypes and the jig and for being an incredible maker and artisan.

My dad and mum for their insight and support. My brother who has an insane amount of marketing knowledge which comes in very handy! Ollie Aplin for all his help with the campaign, Natasha Baker for her awesome design skills.  Janna & Dai Bee & Scott for their help with Shore Ride and the videos. Other Finger Films for the quality videos and Clive Andrews for helping me nail the words.

And thanks to all the people I share the ocean with on an almost daily basis in Shoreham-by-Sea.  You guys are legends for your obsession of the ocean!

Risks and challenges

I've already built 50 prototypes so I don't think too much can go wrong. I'm connected with a number of suppliers that have already delivered the different parts of the product and can now create the tooling for me.

The main concern would be any delays on the supplier side in making the tooling. However, I've already started the conversations with them and haven't been presented with any issues.

I'll be updating you every step of the way as I create this product. I expect to start delivery at the end of October but I'll be updating everybody if there's any delays along the way.
