[Monday 18th January: We're so close now, we feel bold enough to see if we can raise the stakes. Because of the economies of scale with print, we can double the print run if we raise an extra £500-£1,000. Jobseekers are unlikely to be able to afford a book for themselves, so the more we print, the more we can help.]
I’m Ready: the 7 signs that secretly show you’re right for that job is an inspiring 'of our times' story drawn from the real life of one man and his journey from jobless and without hope to confident and employed. As well as showing what can be done, it offers practical, sometimes unconventional, steps all people facing barriers to the jobs market could take to escape unemployment.
The author, Jeff Mitchell, is a former managing director of The Big Issue magazine and founder of Clean Slate Training & Employment, a social enterprise creating and supporting paid work opportunities for long-term unemployed people. For over 20 years, he has been working alongside people with histories of homelessness, offending and ill-health, helping them find their path to employment, independence and a new life.
‘I’m Ready’ is written for any long-term unemployed person who has started to lose hope. It is the ideal gift from someone who is worried about them or an organisation working with them. It reveals the tried and tested tricks and tips built on the belief that almost anyone can work given the right support and opportunity and describes one man’s personal journey and the support and training he used to guide him through.
The crowdfunding offer goes beyond pledges to buy the book. Organisations may choose to buy in talks or presentations, or even the full 2-day ‘7 Signs’ training for up to 15 jobseekers (at a 55% discount), in addition to a bulk purchase of the book. Individuals can pre-order one or more copies of the book and even a dedication to appear in the book when printed, with a message remembering loved ones past and present.
This is the Social Publishing Project’s first book venture, providing the perfect home for ‘I’m Ready’ as a publisher specialising in publications for unemployed and low income audiences. It’s also an independent and not-for-profit social enterprise. (For more on SPP's work to engage, motivate and re-activate, see the blog here.)
Please support the book and help inspire jobseekers everywhere to find new hope by restoring their confidence in all they have to offer and how to present it to employers.
Risks and challenges
The first challenge will be to find a book editor who understands how important it is to engage the target readership with the right tone and language. We don't want to talk down to people but help them see how much they have to offer, it mustn't be patronising or lecturing - no-one knows better than jobseekers themselves how tough it is or what it will take to get ahead. We're open to offers.
The second thing to overcome is how to get the book into the hands of jobseekers. We hope this first edition will be picked up by people who know jobseekers who need some new inspiration and by organisations working with them. Some will just want to pass it on, others may want to read it first and uncover the secrets we've discovered by working with hundreds of workless people themselves. It's been a great learning curve but unemployed people were always the best teachers, so we really hope they recognise themselves in these pages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
