About

By backing this project you are helping us to create America's first triple bottom line (social, environmental, and economic) online flower shop! Southside Blooms is a farm-to-vase florist, providing unique and fashion forward arrangements for events, weddings, online orders, and pop up markets while providing jobs for at risk youth and young adults in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods (see the type of youth partnerships we build in this NBC news video clip). Our urban chic designs draw from the resources and creative inspiration of the inner city– where all our blooms are grown. We call our flowers "beyond-organic" because we use ZERO pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers while these toxic chemicals are standard for the rest of the industry. Our farms convert vacant lots into off grid flower farms using solar powered rainwater irrigation systems and creating jobs for at risk youth in Chicago's inner city neighborhoods.

Southside Blooms is a project of the Chicago Eco House (www.chicagoecohouse.org), a 501c3 nonprofit with a mission of using sustainability to alleviate poverty. 100 percent of our monies go directly towards fulfilling this mission. That means every flower purchase from Southside Blooms creates more jobs for at-risk youth, converts more vacant lots into safe and productive community assets, and directly reduces the negative impacts of climate change through regenerative farming practices.

The money from this Kickstarter will go towards creating a full service e-commerce flower shop website (think 1-800-FLOWERS but only using the flowers that we grow and with enormous social and environmental impact) where YOU the customer can buy flowers from anywhere in the continental USA. There currently isn't anything like this that exists in the floral industry where the flowers are grown beyond organically (see the environmental impact video below to understand what we mean by this) and is tied to bringing economic restoration to inner city communities such as the South Side of Chicago.

If successful, we would hire a web development expert to build the website and we plan to share it with our Kickstarter backers as well as through an aggressive social media marketing campaign. We already have our farms in Chicago where we grow our flowers (see videos) so all we need is an outlet to sell our floral arrangements. This is where YOU come in by backing this project so that we can create an online flower shop that is ready to take your orders so that you can share in building a truly sustainable flower industry from the ground up in some of America's most poverty stricken communities.

There has never been a more empowering way to say it with flowers!

Risks and challenges

Some of the risks associated with this project include weather and logistical challenges. Below are the details regarding these two challenges:

1. Weather

All of our flower farms are outdoors and are subject to extreme weather that could negatively impact our flower crop (Ex. Tornado, flooding, unseasonal frost, etc.). We plan to address these challenges by installing season extension equipment to protect our crops from the elements during their most sensitive stages. To date, the weather has not severely impacted our production.

2. Logistics

Shipping fresh flowers is a unique challenge since most cut flowers are a highly perishable product. After testing a variety of packaging options, and many test shipments across the country, we are confident that we have identified a suitable packaging and shipping model to overcome this challenge. Shipping is limited to only within the continental United States.
