GRAPHITE will be an independent art magazine for people who love drawing and admiring art. We want to strike a balance between elegant coffee-table style and valuable creative resources, so each issue of GRAPHITE will contain an eclectic mix of interviews, tutorials, inspiration and advice. From industry professionals to talented newcomers, from illustrators and urban sketchers to concept designers and comic artists, we aim to bring you diverse and exciting artwork with a traditional media slant, all of which will leave you inspired and informed.
Each issue of GRAPHITE will be a hundred pages long, printed in full colour on uncoated, sustainable paper stock for a lavish, heavy finish. After our debut issue, our plan is to release the magazine on a quarterly basis, bringing you four volumes of high-quality art content every year. The print magazine will be supported by a website and social media pages (Facebook and Instagram), bringing you GRAPHITE-related updates and our pick of great artwork and interesting online finds.
We love magazines and art, but found there’s a lack of a magazine that covers the vast range of drawing, sketching and illustration that’s currently out there. We wanted to bring diverse, talented creators from different artistic backgrounds – from concept art and editorial illustration to fine art and character design – together under one roof in a timeless, stylish periodical.
Above all, we’d like GRAPHITE to be something that’s both beautiful and useful to today’s artists and art-lovers, celebrating great techniques as well as great ideas. It's not just a handsome coffee-table publication to browse through and enjoy the pictures, but a practical resource with thoughtful insights and something new to learn in each issue.
One issue of GRAPHITE will cost £10 + shipping and a subscription will be £35 a year + shipping. We’ve taken a look at other magazines out there and think this is a fair price point, making the publication affordable for readers while enabling us to create more content and support GRAPHITE in its infancy.
We want GRAPHITE to be of consistent high quality, with something different and special in every issue, and think four magazines a year will allow us time to get each one just right. Following our debut Kickstarter issue, our plan is to release a new issue of GRAPHITE in March, June, September and December each year.
The first issue of GRAPHITE is almost complete, with the content currently being edited and designed. It contains interviews with talented professional artists and illustrators, such as Sam Wolfe Connelly; tutorials on drawing techniques, illustration, urban sketching, and concept art, by artists including Matthew Filipkowski and Eleanor Doughty; insights into the images and sketchbooks of some great artists, and more besides! Here are some examples from the interior pages:

The drawing on the cover of our first issue is by Kim Jung Gi. The inside cover will have a thank you section with your Kickstarter name printed on it, if you subscribe via Tiers 2 or 4 of this campaign – this will be limited to the debut Kickstarter issue only.

GRAPHITE is the work of a small creative team at 3dtotal.com, a website and independent publishing house dedicated to the production of inspirational and educational resources for artists. We're passionate about creativity, drawing, and design, so this magazine is what we as creative people would want to read. And of course, we couldn't do it without the brilliant and talented artists gracing our pages.
Thank you to everyone who's given us advice, worked with us, and helped us get this far – and to you for checking out our campaign!
We'd also like to say a massive thanks to everyone who is helping us to spread the word about the campaign:
Though we’re confident that we can make GRAPHITE great, this is our first venture into the competitive field of printed magazines. By launching through Kickstarter, we’ll have the chance to start the magazine off with a strong subscriber base, putting us in a confident position to make future issues. It’ll also be an opportunity to hear from you, our potential readership, about what you hope GRAPHITE can be. So if you have any questions about the magazine, please drop us a comment or message and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!
Risks and challenges
This will be our first print magazine, so in this regard we're walking on new territory - which is exciting! However, as part of 3dtotal Publishing, we have sound experience in publishing printed books, so we can transfer our knowledge from this to producing GRAPHITE. Traditional art is a fairly new avenue for us as a company, so our audience from this point of view is still growing. We hope that Kickstarter will allow us to gain enough support to get the magazine off the ground with a solid foundation that will allow us to keep the periodical going year on year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
