Heroes Map is a tabletop game for one or more players, when designing this game, I was strongly inspired by a tabletop game that I played a lot: WARHAMMER QUEST. I kept from this game two principles:
- Can be played by only one player
- Each game is unique: the dungeon is randomly but logically built
I also would like to design a game with simple rules, sorry if you like to read a big rule book, it's not the case here, you still have the possibility to use your own rules. Here are the basic rules:
Print & Play
The game is designed to be easily printable in black and white. To play, you just need a "Heroes Map" for each player, an event sheet and a pen.
At this state of the project, what a "Heroes Map" looks like:
The "Heroes Map" contains a generated map, rules and an adventure sheet. On the map, you choose a path from the start to the end. On the path there are different events that occur only once. An event is represented by a symbol (for each environment) and a number to specify an event for a certain environment. The event is detailed in the event sheet:
To win, the player must find the optimal path to reach the end of the map with the minimum HP set up at beginning (you can do many attempts until finding the optimal path). If two or more players reach alive with the same HP set up at beginning, we check who collected more gold.
The map contains 6 different environments. Events that can occur depend on the environment encountered by the player.
Infinite and Unique map
I made an algorithm to generate randomly a map, this way each game will be unique.
There is a very hard thing in designing games is to make a well balanced game. That's why here, I completely bypass the problem :). In this game, in theory you can only win, because in all cases, it exists a path between the start point and the end point. The HP points is set up by the player itself... So the player set the difficulty himself. For example, it will be very easy to reach the end with 100HP but easy to do better. In other terms, the player is trying to determine what is the minimum of HP needed to reach the end of the map.
Extension in mind
If the player wants to personalize his map, he can print the map without numbers, so he can choose his own events.
Remark: The map can be also used by a game master for role playing games.
Blank event sheet:
The player can also have the possibility to write his own events on the event sheet:
The project is already at a very advanced step, it's playable. I would like to do better illustration and propose different theme for the map. The game is in English but I plan to add more languages, depending the funding.
Right now, a one-man team, maybe due to my temper but mostly because I did not meet the right people yet. Any way I use to work alone. Since a long time ago, I like design games, imagine stuff, create worlds, I know that is not an easy task to make a good game especially a well balanced game. I am a creator at first, but in the real life I'm lucky to be a lecturer in Software Engineering, that gives me the time to do what I really want to do. Usually I do the art stuff by myself, I am not a professional drawer but I learnt how to draw during my math class. May I need more math classes.
Still reading until here? Thank you, I choose Kickstarter mostly to reach the big community interesting by creativity and new stuff. So it's a great place for sharing what I am making.
Risks and challenges
This project is mostly done and playable. I am in the polishing part. I provide only electronic version, so no shipping problems, you only need an access to a black and white printer and a pen. I'm doing backup of the work and the game is going to be delivred on time if I'm still alive until August.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
