A character-centric comedy about an unfortunately friendly demon and the apathetic highschooler he's supposed to be haunting.

http://welcometohellfilm.tumblr.com/

SYNOPSIS:

Welcome to Hell follows the story of Sock, a sweet but somewhat unstable teen who commits suicide after the accidental murder of his own parents.  In Hell he meets Mephistopheles, the amicable manager of the underworld, who offers him a job: Sock is to become a demon, tasked with haunting humans and driving them to suicide.  At first this seems like Sock's dream job--a way he can finally act on his desires without consequence--but after meeting his first target, a disinterested highschooler named Jonathan, he finds himself with another desire that just might be stronger... and just might have a consequence.

STORY

Welcome to Hell started as a webcomic , but the idea has been with me for much longer than that.  I was always hesitant to put myself out there and try my hand at storytelling, so I just never did.

Then one day I received an acceptance letter and a partial scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute and I realized, "hey, if an accredited institution is going to pay me money to go to their school, then I'm at least worthy enough to post comics on the Internet.

So I posted some pages on deviantArt and they garnered some really good responses as well as two Daily Deviations and I was surprised to find that there are so many people out there who will support original content and actually want to see new ideas happen!

GOAL

Welcome to Hell is a character-centric comedy that explores the idea of a narrative set-up; think of it as a pilot episode.  Character-driven stories have always been a major interest of mine, and I feel that strong characterization is often at the heart of a good series.  And while I appreciate many different forms of storytelling, I've primarily loved and grown up with television, so that's the medium I'd like to explore with my senior film.

While Welcome to Hell would essentially set the stage for a potential series, the goal for this project is to create a solid pilot.

PROCESS/PRODUCTION

Welcome to Hell will utilize traditional hand-drawn animation, with coloring and cleanup done digitally.  Because this is such a time-consuming process, the film's completion depends on hiring colorists and clean-up artists.

The completed film is slated to be roughly 10 minutes, which for a student short of this caliber is a little bit ambitious, but I know with the help of your donations it can be completed!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Pre-production is complete, most of the voice tracks have been recorded, over half of the rough animation has been produced, and I have all of the neccessary software. Therefore, as it stands, the biggest obstacle I'm facing is time. This is where paid assistants come in.

Issues with collaborators might result in delays in which case the film runs the risk of not being completed by the deadline (May 2013). I still intend to finish the film regardless, but it would be a much longer process on my own.

Another potential risk is data loss--software and computers sometimes crash. To avoid having this put me out of commission, I'm backing up all of my work on an external hard-drive, as well as an online server.
