SAKANA is a slice-of-life, romantic comedy webcomic (a sli-li-rom-com, if you will) that takes place in Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market. Our heroes must wrangle unruly seafood and navigate a hazardous dating scene in order to find love, peace of mind, and a paycheck.
Volume 2 represents the second story arc of this long-running webcomic. Following the events from Volume 1, the Sakana brothers, their roommate Taisei, and their abrasive manager Yuudai wake up after a night of drinking to discover a host of new problems have developed overnight. An unfortunate texting mishap lands Yuudai in the hotseat with a persistent ex. Jiro has to mentally prepare for a second date. And the two of them, traditionally enemies, must work together to solve their problems (or at least find a good place to hide until everything hopefully blows over.)
SAKANA has been published free to read online since January 2010! Currently, it is over 19 chapters and 450 pages long, and still going! The comic has always been traditionally inked with a brush pen. Therefore, the interior of Volume 2 will remain black and white, with a nice colored cover. Here is what the strips look like:
Volume 2 will be over 100 pages long: two strips per page for 99 pages, and bonus material beyond that. Some of the Stretch Goals can fund more material in the back of the book, so the final page count depends on the success of this Kickstarter. Books are only available in softcover at this time. Here is a mockup and some specs:
The more stretch goals we hit, the better the book becomes AND, the more bonus items are added to all tiers with the postcard prints ("Goodies" tiers). Here is a breakdown of how BEEFY these tiers can get. It costs the same to pledge to these tiers no matter how many new items are added!
In addition to the new Volume 2 softcover book, copies of Volume 1 and the Help Wanted minicomic will also be available at certain tiers (in case you missed the first Kickstarter or couldn't catch me at a convention!)
Other new reward items include:
> A traditionally inked version of the Volume 2 cover background (the fish market part)
> And MORE!!! to be unlocked through Stretch Goals!
Here's a handy chart for you:
If the SAKANA Volume 2 Kickstarter reaches its 18K goal, additional funds will unlock a series of exciting Stretch Goals to make the book bigger and fancier. Each extra dollar counts!
My name is Madeline "Mad" Rupert Jaspering (Mad Rupert, for short), and I have been writing and drawing comics for the past eight years. For seven out of those eight years, I have been working on SAKANA, my first long-format comic project, which was inspired by a trip I took to the Tsukiji Fish Market in December, 2009.
In addition to comics, I also enjoy hanging out on farms, going to the gym, playing video games, and spending time with my husband, Gannon, and our baby dog, Gizmo. My favorite color is green and I’m less than five feet tall.
Thank you so much for checking out my comic and my Kickstarter! :)

Risks and challenges
All 198 comic strips are already completed, as well as the majority of the bonus rewards and book content. I will have assistance from George Rohac of Organized Havoc in the budgeting, proofing, printing, and fulfillment departments.
Because my previous Kickstarter was delayed, I have taken many extra steps to better schedule reward manufacturing, book proofing and printing, and fulfillment. With George's help, and with the lessons I learned during the last KS, I am confident we can fulfill this campaign in a quick and efficient manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
