My name is Mad Rupert and I am the author of the webcomic, SAKANA! SAKANA is an online comic about a bunch of 20-somethings working at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, their friends and family, and all the hilarious/unfortunate hijinks everybody gets up to in pursuit of happiness, romance, and a paycheck. There's also lots of seafood involved.
You can read the comic for free, right here!! >> www.sakana-comic.com
I've come up with four pin designs featuring the main characters of SAKANA, and I'd like to raise enough funds through Kickstarter to produce at least 100 of each design.
You will be able to choose from any of the available designs via a survey that will be sent out when we're ready to begin fulfilling the project. So far, the lineup is:
- Shiny black nickel plating
- Hard enamel
- Double posts with black rubber clutches
If the project is over-funded, more pin designs will be announced as stretch goals!
*UPDATE* IT'S BEEN OVER-FUNDED, so here are those stretch goals!
Could there be any more stretch goals after these?? Well, I don't wanna jinx it, so let's wait and see for now!
This will be my first time fulfilling a Kickstarter on my own, therefore all cost estimates have been rounded up to ensure a funding buffer in case any unforeseen expenses arise:
- $1300: 400 pins
- $600: USPS shipping domestic and international
- $300: shipping product from supplier, packaging materials
- $300: KS and other processing fees
Mad, you ask, why are you fulfilling this Kickstarter on your own? WELL, the scale of this pin KS is much smaller than my previous KS's where I printed 200 page books and tons of extra bonus rewards. I'm planning to keep this campaign as simple as possible so that I (and my mother, who has graciously volunteered to help me stuff packages) can fulfill it in a reasonable amount of time. I have many years of experience receiving, packaging, and shipping orders from my online store, and I plan to use that knowledge to keep the process running smoothly and efficiently. Here's my estimated timetable:
- September: Run the Kickstarter
- October: Order pins, shipping supplies, etc. Work with manufacturer to ensure pins are looking good.
- November-December: Receive pins and other materials. Assemble packages. Order postage. Ship packages!
- January: Handle any missing surveys, incorrect addresses, returned packages, or other shipping issues that may arise.
When do I pick my pins?
Once we're ready to begin fulfilling the Kickstarter, a survey will be sent out to all backers. Depending on how many pins you pledged for, the survey will ask you to select the characters you want from a list of all available pins. You will also be able to confirm or change your shipping address at that time. We can't send you your pins if you don't fill out the survey so PLEASE DO THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES!
If I choose 2 or more pins, do they all have to be different?
No! You can choose duplicate pins if you'd like! You can pick Jiro + Jiro, Jiro + Taro + Taisei + Taisei, Taro + Taro + Yuudai + Yuudai, etc, etc, THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS!!
Ok, so can I get 8 copies of the same pin?
I appreciate your enthusiasm for this character whose metal face you'd like to cover your body with! But for the sake of simplifying the pin ordering and production process, please limit yourself to 2 of the same design per pledge.
Have you ever made pins before?
I have! Here are some pictures:

Where can I find more of your work or contact you?

Risks and challenges
I have run two large, successful Kickstarters in the past to print the first two volumes of SAKANA. I have also ordered pins from different manufacturers and am planning to use a manufacturer whose pin quality and customer service I was very happy with.
Because the scale of this project is much smaller than my previous Kickstarters, I intend to package and mail orders myself, without the help of a fulfillment service. Should the project become over-funded to an unexpected degree or any other unforeseen problems arise, I have many resources available from my past Kickstarters to call in for help and advice.
I will communicate any problems or manufacturing/shipping delays that arise, asap! Thank you very much for taking the time consider this Kickstarter!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
