About

What is Fusion Tortas?

We're three long time friends, with a bunch of food industry experience, and a passion for great food, great people, and good documentaries. We decided to start a documentary style video blog of what it's really like to start a food truck business. It's been quite an adventure to say the least. Especially since we started our project in July 2012 with only $10,000 and a ton of will. We've also had the help of a lot of good people along the way, so we can't say we've done this completely on our own.

Our idea is to make a documentary style vlog about bringing fusion cuisine to the streets of Houston. We've gone from finding a truck, to fixing it, to finally getting to sell our product and filming it all. We've hit a few hurdles which have set us back a bit, but we keep moving forward. At this point, we need the good will of the Kickstarter community to help us break through and really go out there to sell and film some more. We already have tons of footage that needs to be edited, but with so much work and more and more footage coming in, it's become quite the task. We've made it far with only $10,000 actually. A truck like ours, fixed up, costs about $25,000, and that's without counting all the equipment we already have, so we're doing pretty well. With only a little bit more cash-flow we can seriously get things moving.

That's great, but what is a “Fusion Torta”? Is that all you make?

The torta is the staple Mexican sandwich. They're big hearty grilled sandwiches that typically consist of the same ingredients as tacos or burritos. What we've done, is take it a step further and brought different ethnic recipes and fused them together in our Mexican way. We make tortas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and a daily special here and there. Ever heard of a Grilled Cheese Torta? How about a Teppanyaki Steak Burrito? If not, now you have.

Ok, so what's the plan?

We've secured a location in midtown Houston next to a couple of bars. It's in an area with plenty of other bars around as well, so it's an area with plenty of movement. We've also got our truck to pass all the necessary inspections (RFID tagged too!) to be allowed to sell at that midtown location and we have location releases already signed to be able to film. It was an expensive process, so we've depleted all of our budget and the small profits we made off the few weeks that we've ran. With what little we have left, we're making our next push at this bar location to get some good footage, some good sales, and propel the project forward. We've also been solely invited to cater lunch every day to a huge construction project at the HP buildings in North Houston. It's a really great opportunity, as hundreds of employees (300-400 employees) will be there daily, which in turn, gives us more and more funding for our videos!

What are you going to do with my hard-earned cash, then?

It might sound like we're ready to roll, but there's still many things left to do on our truck. Besides needing working capital for inventory and other running costs, built-in refrigeration is still somewhat of an issue, and we need some sound equipment for our video production. There's also different mechanical repairs that are needed, and plenty of other little fixes too, like proper lighting, implementing a stable electrical system, decals, marketing materials, and a little bit of advertising is what we need this money for. Also, the construction project we've been invited to is a project with a "soft-start", so that's another reason we need Kickstarter help; we need to be able to be ready for max output for when demand calls for it within the next few months.

Our funding goal is $4,000

And you must have a stretch goal too, huh?

Yes we do. What we also plan to do is really push the documentary/web-series aspect of our project once we have more money. We'd love to pay a videographer to come along with us and actually film us like it should be done. We're amateurs; we need all the help we can get. We also need sound equipment and a few other accessories as well. Besides fixing and paying for all that we mentioned above, we'd love to do a wrap job on our truck. Most of the paint on the truck is not even car paint. That in itself runs at $4,000 - $5,000. More funding for advertising our catering services would really help a lot too. We also have a marginal amount of utensils, so we could really, really, use a complete set of kitchen tools.

Our stretch goal is basically $10,000

Alright. Why should we help you though?

Because we're almost there! We've invested so much of our time and little money we could come up with, to get this far, and we have awesome opportunities lined up to get this show on the road. People love our food at the places we've been. We can't just up and fall apart towards the end of the first lap! We need your help, and your good will to make our project flourish. To show you that we're real, and to make our food truck web-series/documentary come true, we've filmed most of our progress. We're keeping that up, so you'll watch your money get to work and grow. We've also sweetened up the pot with some handmade thank you cards, shirts, stickers, tote-bags, cool-guy/girl catering parties, VIP passes, and years worth of fusion for free when you donate. Please, power of the interwebs, help us make our project take off and succeed!

What's with the beginning of your video?

Ha! It's a little ridiculous, we know, but we wanted to give you a little extra something for your time – even if it's a chuckle or two. Plus, we had a bunch of left over bread that we forgot to donate and it went hard on us. Pun definitely intended. ;-)

Risks and challenges

The risks we face are problems that could arise on the truck. It's not a new vehicle, so things definitely will break. Thankfully we have Julian, a professionally trained diesel mechanic and a truck fabricator with years of experience.

We also risk not selling enough to stay afloat and run out of cash in conjuction with surprise costs. At that point our crew will be diminished to a two person operation, with a minimal menu to reduce costs, and if still not turning a profit, the documentary/blog will still continue to be produced while solutions are sought.
