A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
I, like many dog owners, truly love and care about our furry best friends. Their health and safety is the most important thing to us. Nighttime environments are when dogs are most vulnerable to being lost, risk to injury, or worse. I created the K-9ite Safety Light to prepare dogs and their owners for possible situations like the one fateful night when I was with my dog. That's why our mission is to keep dogs in sight and out of danger. Here's how it happened...
Two years ago I faced a common problem that many dog owners have. One night on a walk with my dog Belle, who is a small, black, athletic, rat terrier mix, was overcome by excitement suddenly and unexpectedly when she startled a cat that was crouching beneath a car that shot up the street. In an instant, Belle backed out of her collar to give chase. She vanished quickly and was out of my sight for what seemed like an eternity. I can't begin to explain the fear and anxiety I experienced in the time we were separated. Thankfully, we were fortunate enough to be reunited safe and sound. However, it was at this time I decided to invest in an LED device that would allow me and others to see her in the event she wrestled loose from her collar again.
My episode is not unique by any means. The reason why, is because no matter what we think or how we feel about our dogs being "almost human", they are by nature, lower order animals. Although domesticated, dogs will have an instinctive primal response of fear or excitement to any number of sights, sounds, or smells they may encounter on a walk or hike. When this happens under dark conditions, can only heighten the degree of danger both of you could face.
Anyhow, I realized that based on what happened, that an LED collar would not help in the situation I encountered. I'd have a flashing collar at the end of my leash and Belle would still be up the street and out of sight. An LED harness was also not an option because Belle, like many breeds of dog, can be injured by wearing them based on their bone structure and/or musculature. Harnesses, can also be uncomfortable for some dogs, restrict movement, and can disrupt a dog's full range of natural motion, which can lead to injury.
I developed the unique belt-style LED approach for a number of reasons. The K-9ite Safety Light is universal and can be worn by ALL dogs both big and small, and across all breeds. It's minimalist design places the soft, ergonomic, ultra-bright LED bar where the lights are most visible, which is over the dogs withers (just behind the shoulder blades). This is the highest fixed point on any dog.
We also found that placing LED lights under the dogs chest and neck as in a harness or collar, are ineffective because these are lower and underside areas on the dog. Especially when a dog is walking around they naturally tend to track, and their heads are down sniffing the ground. We also considered breeds with bushy fur, which again, would mute to a large extent, the LED lights around areas of the body where the coat is long and thick.
This design allows us to concentrate the light energy where it is most effective and visible to anyone and everyone from motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and joggers, as well as other dogs. At the same time ensure that it is safe and comfortable for dogs to wear. This also helps us to achieve extended battery life when full charged (by USB). We complete the K-9ite Safety Light with customized color and flash mode functionality, and Bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone.
You will see in the following images and video that we've invested a lot of time and careful thought into this project, and we hope you can both appreciate and support in a meaningful way, what we are fixed to accomplish.
There are often unforeseen delays involved in bringing a product like the K-9ite Safety Light to market for the first time. We have built into our strategic plan a buffer to account for such events. Although we are confident that we will deliver on of by December 2018, we are committed to proactively communicating any changes to this time line with the supporters of this Kickstarter campaign.
One such potential delay that we have accounted for is the testing and certification of the Bluetooth functionality of the K-9ite Safety Light by an lab accredited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This is an outside agency where we will not have direct control of the process or the timeline in which the testing is completed. However, we have calculated a reasonable timeline for this and expect it not to compromise the date of delivery.
