About

Asamaan Festival of Music & Astronomy is set to take place on Gorée Island - Dakar, Sénégal on April 19th, 2013.

The first event of its kind in Senegal, Asamaan triangulates science, art, and technology in a single performance. The festival is designed to be a fun, musical mash-up of the night sky and educational opportunity to explore the cosmos through guided astronomical observation.

Asamaan presents 3 concurrent elements:

- Astronomical Observatory

- Musical Stage

- Video projection / VJs

VJs will source images direct from observatory telescopes for remix and projection on the musical stage.  Musicians will play to the stars, Astronomers will observe to the music, and the public will get their minds blown!

Objectives

ASAMAAN aims to function as both an educational platform for astronomy as well as an opportunity to viscerally experience the “music of the planets” via live performances in a concert under the stars.

“Asamaan,” meaning “sky,” “heavens,” or “outer space” in Wolof, evokes the notion of Earth in context of the wider universe and of humanity as a forcibly interplanetary condition. As such, the curatorial aims of ASAMAAN are dually to explore the cosmos in a literal sense via stargazing and to prompt imaginative exploration via concerts and video that reflect on the aesthetic traditions by which humans contextualize themselves within cosmos.

Concerts by:

Elhadji Noumoucounda Cissoko (Senegal)

Noura Mint Seymali (Mauritania)

Jay Gandhi (USA / India)

The organizations partnering to make it all happen:

ASPA :  l'Association Sénégalaise pour la Promotion de l'Astronomie

ASPA, the Senegalese Astronomy Association, is the preeminent authority on Astronomy in Senegal that will direct the observatory, install telescopes.  Asamaan is scheduled to be the climax / closure to an entire week of ASPA-led public observatories throughout metro-Dakar running 15-19 April as Étoiles de Dakar, ASPA's annual astronomy week www.astrosen.com

Kër Thiossane

An art center focused on issues of digital technology and society in West Africa, Kër Thiossane will be curating the video at Asamaan.  VJs - Tiziana Manfredi and Marco Lena - are commissioned as part of an artist-in-residency at Kër Thiossane.   Kër Thiossane will additionally host a discussion panel on 20 April exploring the idea of outer space as a public commons in African perspective and recent art work on the subject.  www.ker-thiossane.org

ASAMAAN

The duo of festival organizers - half musician/producer and half Gorée resident/community organizer - responsible for curating the musical stage and executing event planning.  Matthew Tinari and Souleyman Ly developed the idea for Asamaan as a site-specific intervention for Gorée.  Their collaboration enlists Tinari's extensive experience with arts presenting in West Africa and Souleyman's role in Goréen society as a resident of over 20 years. http://asamaan.tumblr.com

Why we need your support

The costs of executing the festival are formidable - especially as we seek to remain a FREE public event.  It is important to us to maximize accessibility by keeping admission open as we feel it appropriate to the resident community and the educational aims of the festival.  Looking at the sky and listening to great music should be free!

After receiving some initial backing from the US Embassy in Dakar, Insitut Français, Cinema Numerique Ambulant, and Eiffage Senegal, Asamaan has secured some of the essentials and engendered some great support and enthusiasm around the event.  However, we're not all the way there yet on the budget and need extra funds to make Asamaan a success! Your support will go directly towards the following:

-Artist Fees, Travel, and Lodging

-Publicity / Promo

-Logistics; equipment rental, event staff, permit fees, etc.

Risks and challenges

Logistically an island is always a challenge. Especially when said island is a UNESCO world heritage site accessed only by ferry and free of motor vehicles for equipment transport. This is where we plan to install a full-scale concert stage, astronomical observatory, and video projection screens. It will be challenging and require robust support, however we are not the first to organize on Gorée and are reassured by the fact that past concert events have been successful. We are working to coordinate as best as possible with the Port Authority / Ferry embarcadère on issues surrounding the transport of equipment and people to and from the festival location. Asamaan will benefit greatly from its social connection to the resident community on Gorée island and will be able to mobilize significant volunteer support.
