The First Trail We Made: Tail of the Dragon:
We have all been on a trip that we remember more for the journey than for the actual destination. Some of us have a favourite road trip. Some of us have run a marathon. Some of us have a favourite hike. And some of us have sailed across an ocean.
What all these adventures share is the experience of a journey rather than just getting to a destination. And it was a map that guided each of us on our way.
Our goal is to transform those travels into art that captures the essence of what we have accomplished. Our goal is simple. Create a memento of any route you take in life.
Our art is unique in the way that it allows its owners to walk a fine line between abstract art and personal expression. Our art tells a unique story: yours. Though abstract, you will know exactly what it means as each curve means something special to you because you were there. And every time someone comments on the apparent abstraction of it you get to tell your story.
The Design Process
Our design process started with defining the basics of how a trail can be displayed. To do this we removed all clutter from our maps until we were left with the most basic element. No paths that we did not take, no rivers we did not see, no mountains we did not climb. Just our route.
We then selected the best way to display this trail. Some of us wanted to transform the trail into sculpture. Some of us wanted a more traditional canvas print. So we designed both.
Our sculptures are machined in North America from our aluminium and polyethylene composite panels. Our panels have a high strength to weight ratio enabling us to capture every curve of your journey. Panels have either a brushed aluminium surface, which gives the sculptures that raw, industrial look, or are printed with any one of our creative patterns or colors. Patterns range from carbon fibre to asphalt to walnut to burnt orange and black.
You can choose to hang your sculpture on a wall or display it on a pedestal. If you choose to hang your sculpture on your wall it will be shipped with 3M command strips. You can also choose to display your sculpture on a pedestal which will be included in your order. Our pedestals are made from only the best walnut we could find and are sized according to the size of your sculpture.
Our Canvas Prints
For the more traditional minded, our canvas prints uniquely capture the essence of being on the trail.
We have selected the best quality canvas: a matte textured, bright white, consistent poly-cotton blend. No additives. No agents. Our quality canvas prints are designed to last over 100 years without fading.
We have selected only the top-of-the-line Canon professional equipment to print your tracks to canvas. The Giclee printing method is the best in the industry.
How to Create Your Route.
Finally, to capture your journey and transform it into your art we have created two methods and are developing a third.
First, there are already a wide variety of GPS units and apps available that enable you to record your journey. Almost all these GPS units and GPS apps enable you to export your route as a GPS file, either .KML or .GPX.
Whatever your travels, if you have a GPS enabled phone or device you will be able to record your route and export your data for upload to our site at tracksedge.com.
Or, if you just want to start making your trail you can use our Google Maps plugin to just draw your favourite route by dropping pins. If your journey is long it may take you a while but the end result is well worth the wait.
Once you have uploaded or drawn your route you will be able to select the style, size, color, and display options to personalise your canvas or sculpture. You can even preview your art before you buy.
Lastly we are working to offer a set of famous races, hikes, drives, and other pre-drawn routes that you can select from. Our goal is to offer a wide selection of routes from as many activities as possible; from marathons such as the Boston and NY Marathon, Nurburgring to cycling gran fondos and famous hiking trails. We want to hear from you which routes you’d like to see. Visit our facebook page to cast your vote. Using your suggestions we will create a set of ready-made trails available to be purchased as canvas or sculpture. Below is a small sample of the routes (marathons, hikes, canoe routes, and famous drives) you will be able to select from.
However you choose to create and display your journey we are sure the end result will look fantastic.

Hiking in New Hampshire:
The selection of the sculpture and canvas materials have been finalised. Samples have been printed, machined and tested. The website that enables you to upload or draw your route has been designed, built and tested.
But we need your help to keep going. We still need to purchase our printer to create the canvas prints and we need to purchase a stock of framing material and canvas.
This is where you come in. We really want to make this happen. We put in our own money to develop the concept over the last year and we need your help to get production rolling.
We expect to ship product in November if this project reaches its funding goals, perfect timing to give this as a Christmas gift.
Finally, for our top tier backers we are offering a truly magnificent piece of art. Each trail will be machined from solid aluminium and hard anodized in black. This is the same coating process used to protect submarine components and bulletproof vests. Each trail will then be mounted on a solid walnut base that has been hand finished with 100% natural Tung Oil.
This sculpture will be shipped in a solid cedar wood case and will be engraved on both the pedestal and box with your message. We think this will be an exceptional product for an exceptional journey.
We appreciate your help.

We are currently working with a great print shop to create the canvas prints. The goal however is to buy a large format printer to bring the production process in-house. Production of the canvas prints will therefore be dependant on delivery of this large format printer and associated supplies. If for whatever reason we are unable to receive shipment of our printer and canvas supplies in time for guaranteed delivery of the first 100 orders before Christmas, we will outsource the printing of those canvas prints to our current printer.
For the sculptures, we have gone through several iterations and are very confident that we can deliver a final product. Packaging, a supplier of walnut pedestals, and a machining facility have all been arranged. However, as we are outsourcing the machining of our sculptures, we are dependant on our supplier's timing and capabilities. We have met several times with our machinist and have a contract for work over the next four months. We are confident we can deliver the product. In the event that we have issues with our current machining facility we have a second facility that is capable of doing the work that we require.
Having already produced many versions of both sculptures and canvas prints, we have a clear knowledge of the amount of time it takes to manufacture each piece as well as the detail that goes into making each a reality. This knowledge has been factored into the expected delivery date. We do not anticipate any delivery delays, but if there are, we will make sure that the nature of the delay is known to all backers.
