...it all started with that ridiculous CRCT rap.
In 2009, after teaching general music to elementary school-aged children for many years (and writing quite a few silly songs along the way) I decided to compose a song about our CRCT standardized test for a school pep rally. It was a HUGE hit with our students and I began thinking about what else I could do to make a similar impact.
Fast-forward to 2010. My good friend Shannon Barron, a co-worker, asked me to come up with a musical way to help her students with place value concepts. Bam. The song was written, recorded, and in her hands the next day. After that, we spent the rest of the school year exchanging ideas about what needed to be addressed with her students. Songs like Fractions, Explorers, and more were the result.
This album is my first foray into educational music. It started as a way to help a friend and students I care about but has become much, much more. I am proud of these songs and I hope you'll enjoy listening to or using them as much as I did making them.
When you hear these songs, you're hearing ME - every song was written, performed (all instruments and vocals), mixed, and mastered by yours truly. It's something I'm very proud of... but it NEEDS to be launched on a national scale, and that takes funding (hint, hint... that's where YOU come in!)
My goals for this project include funding a national marketing campaign, including working with an outstanding agent who is already on board... just waiting for me to say, "GO." Physical CD's need to be made. Photo shoots, targeted demographic marketing. I want this album to be in catalogs, on PBS, on music store websites, on shelves, etc. I want to get the word out that somebody is making educational music that's not cheesy... it's stuff kids are REALLY getting into. Thanks for helping me launch this project to the audience it deserves!

Great question! Additional funds will be used to get this project (Get Your Learn On) merchandised and distributed, as well as help get the next project underway (already have several songs done with a target age group of K-2nd grade!) Upgrading the website and launching the album into iTunes, Amazon, as well as deeper physical distribution and the purchase of a portable sound system are also immediate goals on the to-do list, assuming we surpass our goals. Specifically, a high-quality, low-weight sound system that I can take into gyms, theaters, and schools.
Philanthropy is 110% accepted and encouraged. If you believe in what I'm doing and would like to make a sizable donation towards the funding of this project... God bless ya! I'll contact any large donors personally to thank them and discuss how to best use their generous donation!
Matt Garwood is an elementary music teacher at Rocky Plains Elementary School (RPES) in the Newton County School System. This is his 9th year teaching. He was chosen "Teacher of the Year" by his peers several years ago, enjoys a very high-tech approach to music education, and is an accomplished classical and electric guitarist, bassist, percussionist, and he enjoys rapping about silly, silly things whenever possible.
Of course! http://MattGarwoodMusic.com is where you want to go! Audiences are already eating this stuff up - a recent concert at a high-school (of all places) had the audience out of their seats, rapping and singing along! If jaded "I'm-too-cool-for-most-stuff" high-schoolers are getting down, you know it'll be a hit with its target age group of 3rd-5th graders!
