For those of you who might not know me, my name is Carla Wyzgala, aka Carlations, and I am a watercolor pin-up illustrator of all things pretty ladies. Using vintage pin-ups and the art of burlesque as inspiration for an unapologetic balance between femininity and strength, I consider my work a celebration of the female form. I am also the co-creator and illustrator of Hidden Door Comics, making fairytale graphic novels in watercolor with my sister. I've been illustrating professionally since earning a BFA from the American Academy of Art, Chicago, in 2009.
And for those of you who have so kindly backed my past projects Carlations Process (2013) and Blue Eyes and the Beastling (2017), welcome back! It has been long enough since my last art book Carlations Process, and while the graphic novel Blue Eyes and the Beastling was quite a beast itself to work on for 2+ years, I have managed to compile a beautiful collection of sketches and warm ups for this art book!
Carlations Sketchbook vol.1 will be a 6"x8.5" soft cover sketchbook with 64 pages of sketches and warm up paintings that showcase my creative thought process. This little book is a chance for me to share pieces that have never been available for purchase before and rarely seen. And, you guessed it, the first of many volumes to come as I plan to do a series of limited run books.
My sketchbooks are my idea libraries, an outlet where fragments and shadows of an idea come to life. Whether fully rendered or a simple gesture, they are collected memories. Some are glimpses in to future concepts to revisit, while others will remain as is and nothing more.
This book is a celebration of practice, communication and exploration. It will include a somewhat random array of work from:
- warm-up experiments with new mediums
- pencil thumbnails to be later turned into paintings
- sketching from pop-culture inspiration
- anatomical practice and gestures
and other various forms of practice!
To keep things simple, the book is what this campaign is all about!
Bookies tier and higher will all receive a signed copy of Carlations Sketchbook vol.1
Sketchaholic tiers will also include a one of a kind sketch right inside the back cover
I HEART Originals super awesome tier includes all of that PLUS an original pencil sketch or warm up painting from one of the pieces featured in this book, ripped right out of my sketchbook and signed! This is the ONLY opportunity to buy these originals from me and will be rewarded on a first come, first serve basis (meaning you will get to request in backer order from a list of 10 different pages).
This book is already 100% finished and queued up for printing in Canada. Sam of PrintLore has done a beautiful job designing this book. I have set this goal for printing a quantity of 500 books but have hopes to raise enough to print the intended quantity of 1000. In either case, they will be limited edition and will not be re-printed. I also have a few upgrades to the books in mind if we meet our stretch goals!
Sketching is so very important to the art process and a great feat to fill an entire sketchbook up. This book is a celebration of many sketchbooks that I finished over the last 2+ years and a fun reminder that everyone benefits from practice. I hope to inspire others to pick up a pencil and draw too!
One of my favorite things to collect over the years has been other artists art books. I simply love seeing the sketches and unfinished thoughts as a way to peak into their creative thought process. I am so excited to share mine with you!
Risks and challenges
With the expertise of Sam at PrintLore, this little sketchbook is beautifully prepared and 100% ready for printing, so no wasting time there! This project is simply awaiting the funds. Once this campaign is over, the printing will begin immediately in Canada, with an estimated 2-3 weeks from start of production, 2 weeks to have shipped to Carla's residence and then about 1-2 weeks to sign and distribute all rewards to backers! With an estimated 5-7 weeks, I expect to have everything completed by Sept. 2018. Set backs and delays have happened in the past with printing in Asia due to time differences, long Holidays, and unexpected humidity. This is the primary reason for printing in Canada and should reduce these risks significantly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
