I have been performing and recording neglected music for my whole career. There is so much music that has fallen through the cracks, in danger of being lost to history. My past two recordings have been devoted entirely to this music. What makes my new CD different is that half of it will be devoted to my own compositions -- two piano sonatas and a Prelude and Fugue. This will be the first time my music will be commercially available, so this is a huge turning point in my career as a composer!
The other half of this recording will be devoted to piano pieces and songs by Vittorio Giannini (1903-1966) -- one of America's finest twentieth-century Romantic composers. I recorded some of Giannini's published pieces in 1994, on my very first CD. Much of his work is unpublished. I discovered the manuscripts to two of the pieces I'll be recording -- they were among the papers of one of Giannini's students. No one has ever heard these pieces! I feel like an archaeologist, rediscovering history as I work on this music! And Giannini's writing is probably the biggest influence on my own, so I have a deep personal connection with his work. If you watch the video I've created for this Kickstarter campaign, you'll hear excerpts from both my music and Giannini's, and you'll hear the warmth and personal expressiveness I prize in his work and strive for in my own.
Tenor Nicholas Pulikowski will sing the two Giannini songs on this recording. You can hear him in the video, and I'm sure you'll agree that he has a special knack for Giannini's music.
We'll be recording at Joseph Patrych's studio in The Bronx. Joe was the sound engineer on my previous two CDs, both of which have gotten incredible reviews from Fanfare, the American Record Guide, and many online publications. Walter Simmons will be my producer. Walter is a respected musicologist and a true expert on Giannini's music -- his book on Giannini and five other composers is the authoritative go-to text for anyone interested in contemporary American Romantic music.
The music is in my fingers and ready to go! All I need is your help covering production costs. I've selected a variety of rewards that I hope will excite you -- and I hope you will join me in bringing this important, historic project to completion!
Risks and challenges
The dates and personnel for this recording have been secured; however, illness or injury is always a risk and would alter the timeline for completion if it should occur. Once the recording has been edited and mastered, I will submit it to my current record label for postproduction. If the president of my label passes on the recording, or if the label were to close before the recording has been completed, I would need to find a new label, which would affect the timeline for completion.
The above-mentioned risks are highly unlikely. In addition to this Kickstarter campaign, I have also applied for grant money and have reserved personal savings to cover any unexpected production expenses.
In the happy circumstance that I raise more money than is needed to complete this project, I will reserve the extra funding to begin production on a subsequent recording of wind sonatas by Giannini along with my own wind sonatas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
