Schmutz (shm-oots) – collaborates with artists worldwide to create one of a kind wrist watches. Through this collaboration, schmutz provides an affordable, visible, and collectible method of displaying art.

****           SEE BELOW FOR NEW ARTISTS!!                     ****

“When I first envisioned the concept of Schmutz, I imagined a hand-painted timepiece that was distinctive, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable. Hand-painted dials were the standard 150 years ago. It was that same artistry that my great, great grandmother, Rosetta Schmutz studied while living in La Chaux De Fonds, Switzerland. That artistry is now rare and expensive. Today, a professionally hand-painted timepiece crafted by a trained enamel artist would cost thousands of dollars. Schmutz is committed to creating unique and broadly accessible, hand-crafted timepieces, featuring the work of talented artists..”

- Lee Dowell Founder

No two Schmutz watches are exactly alike. Each hand-painted timepiece is a collaboration between artists, leather craftsman, machinists, watchmakers, and YOU! We want to be sure we will create something you will love, so you'll be able to join in during the creation process. You'll choose the casing, strap color, and design. You may even be selecting an artist to handcraft your dial. We ensure that high quality parts are used in Schmutz timepieces.

For this first round of watches, we have carefully chosen each artist for their unique style and medium to hand-paint dials. When choosing the commissioned watch each timepiece will be completely unique. Remember, choosing an artist will be similar to commissioning a piece of art. Choose one whose style you love. As Schmutz grows we will be adding more exceptional artists. Click on the artist's name to see their website!

NEW ARTIST:

Visual artist Allison Kunath lives and works in Los Angeles.

Her work balances forms that are hard & soft / masculine & feminine / mathematic & intuitive. Graphic, geometric & architectural elements are complimented by flowing, organic arrangements. Both ends of the spectrum meet as she explores identity, consciousness, & a remembrance of our true beauty & divinity. The two hemispheres of the brain are in constant dialogue as she plays with the balance between control and surrender.

Allison is currently working on an 'original design' that will be sold as a printed dial watch with a separate reward tier. She will also be creating custom designs for backers who purchase her commissioned reward.

Below are examples of her work. The final design used for the printed watches will be different than these images shown. For more examples of her work - see her website here - www.allisonkunath.com

“I create abstracted imagery that is fundamentally tied to the exploration of my ancestry. Raised in Japan, I began to foster an interest in art, as drawing was a common part of Japanese youth culture. As I moved through college I began to discover the relevance of ancestral ties evident in my creative process. As part of that process I recycle found materials, a tradition I discovered was common to my samurai great grandfather.”

"I met Rua when I was studying with a watchkmaker in New Zealand. Born and raised on the small island of Rarotonga, Rua is a self-trained sketch artist. His creations are a blend of his Rarotongan heritage and traditional Maori or Moko designs. All of Rua's designs will be engraved on Cherry wood and be completely one of a kind." - Lee Dowell

Skye's versatile style is shown through her hand-painted, hand-stitched dials. Recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Houston, Skye works predominately in the medium of painting, but occasionally uses fiber for added texture and interest. She uses handmade mulberry paper, thread, and watercolor paints for her dials.

"America is a melting pot of race, culture, ideas and styles. I am personally immersed in this heterogeneity. When relating my ancestry to others, I often explain that I am 1/32 Iroquois and that one of my forebears was a tribal chief. And yet, what I rarely share is that my knowledge of this distant heritage ends there. My artwork is a manifestation of my recent attempts to understand this past and explore my inclination toward Native American traditions. By remixing and adding native patterns over one another in transparent layers and using pixelated images from Navajo rugs, I am endeavoring to make sense of a culture I longingly desire to be a part of; while acknowledging that though that which is lost in time, that heritage can still express itself through patterns of its visual art. I use paints and collaging processes to explore these ideas while recognizing that it is difficult to find the purity of any culture in today's global generation"

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Trent graduated from the University of Utah in 2004 with a BFA. He is actively involved in a diversity of ongoing projects. Trent’s work combines formal academic painting, comics, graffiti, and popular culture. He currently works out of CAPTAIN CAPTAIN Studios in beautiful downtown Salt Lake City.

"I'm inspired by the abstract expressionist greats of the 40's and 50's and choose to use my hands to apply paint instead of a brush. Working on a horizontal surface from all sides, I feel closer to my art and more easily able to mix vivid color combinations along with creating contrasting movement. Uninterested in painting known objects, I prefer to create abstract images that arouse emotions unique to the individual viewer."

Schmutz is proud to collaborate with award winning artist Erin Berrett. Erin’s work is displayed with other internationally accomplished artists at the J. Willott Gallery in Palm Desert, CA, and Williams Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Utah. A graduate of the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Erin will be doing a limited series of 10 pieces for this first project...with more to come as Schmutz continues to grow (with your help)! For this series she will be focusing on everyday, commonplace items.

Here is Erin's statement on her work - “The paradox of the term 'still life' inspires me. There's a fundamental tension between the still and the life, isn't there? That's what I try to capture when I paint. To me, objects are never completely motionless, or emotionless for that matter. They tremble. They vibrate. And those vibrations are produced not only by the construction of the object, but the external forces exerted on it --- the angle of the light, for instance, and the perspective of the viewer. What's a good painting to me? It's hard to know, but I'll tell you this: when the object comes alive, and the environment, the viewer and I all participate to make that happen - that's success to me."

For each piece, Erin uses acrylic gesso (3 layers, sanded fine), oil paint, liquin medium, Gamsol and Soluvar.

After more than a year spent designing and crafting prototypes, we are ready to take Schmutz to the next level. With your funding, we will be ordering custom Swiss movements, with more room between the hands and dials for the artists to have space for varying textures, materials and paints. We will also be placing a large order of cases, straps, and deployment clasps; in other words, everything we need to create these beautiful timepieces. We also have plans to purchase machinery in order to move more production in house.

Straps: We currently have 2 strap options. Tan Suede and Grey Suede. Each strap in genuine suede + leather. (Full leather straps coming soon) Each strap is 20mm in width and includes a brushed nickel buckle.

Case: you can choose between a brushed stainless steel or black PVD coating (physical vapor deposition) case. Dimensions below -

Water Resistance:  5 ATM (atmospheres) water resistance, or the equivalent of 133 feet of underwater depth.

We would like to continue to expand upon the concept of Schmutz. With plans to have each step of the Schmutz watch manufacturing process take place here in the US. We have plans for more art based watch designs as well as other timepiece accessories. In the works is a unique packaging concept for each Schmutz watch. While this is still in the design phase, we plan on patenting the design and (depending on funding) offering it to you as soon as possible!

Risks and challenges

We have carefully planned this launch for quite a while now - however, with a project of this scale that depends so heavily on the combined efforts of so many individuals...things can still go wrong. There could be manufacturing delays with the movements, cases, or leather straps. There could be delays or changes in regards to the artwork and artists as well. While none of these risks are likely, we will continue to maintain an open line of communication throughout the whole process. As mentioned in the video, we have a strong connection to Lees Great-great Grandmother Rosetta Schmutz, and hope to honor that connection by running the business with integrity while creating the highest quality watches possible.
