Hello. My name is Patty, and I am an independent singer/songwriter.
What is "Folk to Know"?
Folk to Know is destined to be my 5-song children's music EP detailing the lives of real life activists, humanitarians, and do-gooders in the world. The CD will include songs inspired by Harriet Tubman, Johnny Appleseed, Grace Lee Boggs, Che Guevara, and Annie Oakley.
How did "Folk to Know" begin?
The project began when I was playing around in the antifolk circle in the East Village of NYC back in 2008. I saw that people were writing non-fictional songs - about real events e.g. space time travel, the apocalypse, fake political figures, etc. I was really fascinated by how daring songwriters in the circle could be, both as performers and writers. Through collabing with a friend, I wrote the first song for what would be Folk to Know called, "Annie Oakley," the first widely known female sharpshooter from the 1800's.
When I moved to L.A. that same year, I also began to work as a music teacher with middle schoolers in low income areas of the city. I taught guitar, bass, drums, and helped kids figure out how to piece together their own songs. That's when I saw just how important music and creative expression is in helping kids cope with difficulties in their own lives. Since then, I continued to collect songs about people's stories I thought could inspire, entertain, and enlighten young listeners. Folk to Know is my first attempt at a children's music record. It's not your average "press play and sing-a-long" cd, but I hope it'll be the kind of record that make kids think about their potential role in the world. I'd say that's the spirit behind a lot of my tunes - courage, persistence, and a resolve to do what feels right to you in your community, despite the naysayers, or odds stacked against you.
As it stands, the expenses of recording, mixing, producing, and duplicating a CD can be very costly - especially to an independent musician (and subsequently, a broke grad student) like myself! Suffice it to say, this project will not happen without generosity from folks like you. So, today I ask you in earnest to support "Folk to Know" by donating any amount whatsoever - with the option of receiving one of my Kickstarter packages (please see to the right).
My official goal is $2000 - with your generosity, I have less than 30 days to make Annie, Johnny, Harriet, Grace, and Che come to life.
If you're unable to donate, please tell your friends, family, and loved ones about this project. Post a link on your facebook/twitter/etc. to this kickstarter page. Show your friends my youtube page. I am and would be eternally grateful for the support!!
Thank you so much for visiting :)
All the best,
Patty a.k.a. Pattycake

For a myriad of reasons - because you want to support local, independent artists who want to "damn the music industry man"!
Because you can get an awesome Kickstarter prize that could include a multitude of the following - buttons, t-shirts, signed copies, handmade drawings, and/or a private show by the cake herself (no joke)!
Or maybe because you just care a lot about music enrichment for children. All great reasons. :)
Post a link to this page on your facebook and on your friend's facebook walls. Tell them you know a rather charming and sincere indie songwriter who is trying to make a children's music album and has less than 30 days to meet her fundraising goal. Helps if you make it sound urgent, too.
