Encounters with the Imaginary Volume 3
A fantastical art anthology delving into the world of imaginary creatures. Featuring new art and short stories from over 40 artists!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, September 28 2018 3:00 PM UTC +00:00.
Woohoo! :) We unlocked the enamel pin stretch goal!! All deluxe tiers and up will now be getting a boneshaker skeleton key - hard enamel pin with their book!
We are really excited about our next stretch goal as well! This year, rather than doing 3 smaller metallic prints, we are offering a full-size, 9x12 metallic print of the gorgeous painting Corinne Reid created for the cover of this year's volume! The way these metallic prints gleam in the light is going to look so so lovely with this painting!
Welcome to our Kickstarter campaign for the 3rd volume of Encounters with the Imaginary, a fantastical art anthology featuring the work of dozens of wonderful artists - each with their own style and story to tell!
This year's volume has more than double the artists than years past. Over 40 artists have each chosen an imaginary creature, painted a series of illustrations based on that creature and have written a small piece of fiction to accompany their art.
Almost all of the art and writing is finished, and we are now in the process of editing and putting the book together. Each artist has spent months crafting their spreads and building a world for you to explore. Encounters with the Imaginary is filled with fantastic realms from each artists’ imagination!
From the beginning of this project, we've wanted to create a book that is a pleasure to read and beautiful to look at - so we've taken care to select high-quality materials and printers to ensure this is a book you love spending time with. The interior will be printed on sturdy 100lb paper and the cover will be a strong 10pt cover weight paper.
With so many artists, Volume 3 is roughly 230 pages long, with over 45 full-page illustrations - each one accompanied by several smaller pieces from each artist's series. The book will be a perfect bound, 9 x 12 inch softcover just like the previous two volumes. They make a lovely matching set!
If you would like to see tons more of the art that has been created for the book - check out our Facebook page where we post all of the work and introduce the wonderful artists!
We are offering an 'a la carte' option to get the book by itself for those of you who want the no-frills option - and a deluxe option for those of you who want all the extra stretch goal goodies to go along with your book! While some stretch goals will come with every tier (like cover upgrades), other stretch goals (like pins and extra prints) will only be available for those who pledge at the Deluxe level and up. You can switch tiers anytime before the campaign ends! You may also purchase these items through PledgeManager after the campaign, however, they are less expensive when bundled into the Deluxe tier.
This year, rather than having a huge number of tiers with different book and print combinations - we are letting you customize your reward package! First, select the book tier you want and then increase your pledge by the cost of the print package you want. Add as many different print packages to your reward tier as you like by simply adding the 'print package' total to your pledge.

We know that a lot of you love collecting original art as well! Though we do not have specific reward packages for original art in the Kickstarter itself, we do have several artists who have created beautiful original paintings and sketches for their series. We will be featuring them in updates throughout the Kickstarter - with a link to go and purchase the art directly from the artists themselves! This way the artist gets to keep 100% of the money from their art without it getting parceled in with the Kickstarter fees.
So, if you love collecting original art - keep an eye out for the updates. There are some truly beautiful paintings and drawings that will be for sale!
Vol. 3 currently has 44 participating artists - double the number of the previous two volumes. Each of our artists has their own unique style and vision - you can be sure that every contribution has a personality all its own! Allow us to introduce the wonderfully creative people who have helped create and fill this book with wonderful work!

Important Note on Shipping: shipping is not included in your pledge.
We will be collecting shipping fees next year when the book is ready to ship. International backers will be responsible for customs on their own shipments. Please see our FAQ for more info on why we have chosen this method this year.
We have an estimate for the shipping below - but this is just an estimate based on what we’ve been provided by our potential fulfillment partner and how much we estimate each package may weigh. There is no way of knowing in advance how shipping rates will change in the coming year.
Thank you so much for your support! Creating this book has been a joy and it means the world to us to be able to see it printed and shared with those who love art, stories and the imaginary! If you like the work, please consider sharing our Kickstarter, so others can enjoy it as well!
Risks and challenges
Because the majority of the work has already been created, the risks are minimal! Each artist has already created their art and writing, the book layout is designed and all that remains are a few introductions and editing of the text. Also, this is the third time we've printed a book (and run a Kickstarter), and we have learned a lot from the last two years, so we put all that knowledge into this one!
To streamline things and overcome potential challenges as we grow, we are partnering with PledgeManager in order to collect shipping, keep our data organized, and offer an easy way for backers to customize their pledges. We are also finalizing talks with a third-party fulfillment company, so that we can ship all of our rewards worldwide as quickly and as reasonably priced as we can.
While it is extremely likely that rewards will make it to backers sooner, we have also set a reward shipment date of July 2019, just to be safe.
Of course, we cannot foresee every possible bump in the road, but from this point, it looks to be pretty smooth waters ahead! We are a group of passionate and motivated artists who have dedicated months of work to this already and we can’t wait to share the book with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
