About this project
THE FINAL DAYS!!!
Well, it's about time you arrived, At least you're here now so let's get started! My name is Gideon Gallows and I'm an adventurer. I enjoy traveling the world, visiting foreign and exotic places, hunting for beautiful women and fantastic adventures.Whether it's fisticuffs with a Yeti, or escaping some royal guard types for being overly familiar with a princess, I am always up for a grand challenge
But enough about me, for now, although I am astounding and easy to talk about, we have business to attend. Let's talk about what brought you here. A short time ago, in Timbuktu, in a less than reputable drinking establishment, tales of a grand adventure were whispered into my ear by a fine fellow that I had an aggressively friendly conversation with.
"A giant squid god?! You're a liar and a cheat O'brian!" I said, dodging a flying bar stool.
"It's an excellent opportunity for travel and danger, you would love it!", he said.
"I have never loved anything save my goodly mother sir!", said I, right before rendering him unconscious with a mounted boar's head.
Hmm, truth be told I do love both travel and danger, I thought to myself, but I hate paying for stuff. "Investors!", I said.
This brings us to your role. This is an excellent opportunity for you to live vicariously through me, by paying for me to travel around the world. You can be sure I'll hunt down this group of squid dragon god cultists! Seems to me that any group that wants to worship a giant squid god aught to be forged from a tough mettle.
Now, nothing beats traveling on another man's, ... or woman's coin, but why would you pay for me to go out gallivanting on an adventure? Well, simply put, I am quite manly. Certainly manly enough for a job like this. Why, just this morning I killed a bear with my bare hands and chopped him up into delicious steaks while I typed this message up. Why should you pointlessly put yourself into the path of heedless danger when you can share in the adventure from the comfort of a fine, warm, leather chair in your study as you partake of your finest malted scotch by a crackling fire. But also, in return you get whatever kind of squiddy booty I find along the way! I don't have a fancy for gold or shiny things, I love the adventure. Now, I'm not quite sure what kind of treasure squiddy god worshipers keep around, but it's yours, I'm just looking for the fight!
I'll be sending you correspondence of my doings just so that you know I haven't up and made off with your financials. Never let it be said that Gideon went back on his word or that I ever cheated a fellow. This should all make for quite an exhilarating story! So, what do you say, would you like to sign up for an adventure?
Stretch Goal 5500$
Good afternoon Intrepid explorers!
I have recently had a discussion with a crafty individual in the hunt for the now named CThoohoo cult that has illuminated me to the promise of further treasure opportunities. If our expedition can reach a funding level of 5500$ it will give me the additional resources needed to investigate the location to a trove of lost coins of antiquity, the Cthulhian coin! Its design is still a mystery, but we have heard rumblings of it that can verify its existence. We expect to have more details within the week though, and we will be sharing them with you as soon as we have them. I certainly believe if any are found they will be remote and few, only enough for those that are a part of this expedition.
(Stretch Goal Facts. each supporter will receive one free Cthulhu coin with the opportunity to add on more. they will be cold cast of varying metals types. The Design is still being worked on and will be posted up in about a week)
Exclusive Cthulhu coin
Plucked from the Gaping maw of death of a Giant Squid Demon in the Caribbean! Read the blood curdling tale in the updates section http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1934824356/cthulhu-idol-narrative/posts/608722 It's best to avoid it though if you have a weak heart!
(Rough draft art, not yet weathered or aged.)
If the stretch goal is reached each investor pledging 20$ or more will receive one Cthulhu coin.
for a further investment into the expedition Gideon can assure a treasure investment of:
each coin 5$ if you invest enough to secure 4 coins, Gideon will add a 5th coin for your dedication. Simply augment your pledge and send Kenneth a note telling him you intentions
Hello, my name is Ken and this is The Cthulhu Idol Narrative. It's an idea I had about trying to combine a story telling experience with an artistic sculpture. I have seen many beautiful Cthulhu idols online from some amazing artists and that inspired me to make my own idol, but then I thought it would be really cool to take it one step further. What if there was a story with it.
How cool would it be to hear the story as a firsthand account about how this idol came to be found or taken from the hands of a Cthulhu. I love the Cthulhu Mythos and Lovecraft's work and the stories surrounding each of the idols in The Call of Cthulhu. I thought it would be fun to wrap a story around an idol I made and have it narrated by a manly man adventurer. I am, of course, no Lovecraft, and my version will have a more comical flair to it, but I believe everyone will have a great time.
As Gideon travels, he will send a postcard or letter telling you about where he is in his adventure. It might be only a quick telegram or it could be a lengthy letter filled with harrowing tales of close calls. And in the end, you receive a souvenir from the story. You'll be able to choose from a poster to an idol and then the type of box your idol comes in. You can also choose whether the idol is limestone or bronze and each idol will be hand cast with a detailed patina.
While Gideon keeps you informed about his adventure, I will be keeping you informed about the production with updates on the blog (production blog). I'll be happy to engage in any kind of discourse about the project, especially concerns or questions. I want to make sure you feel secure in your backing and I'm happy to have anyone follow along with me.
Once the Kickstarter is funded, the story begins! Gideon will send you a letter explaining his plans. Then, over the course of time that it takes to produce the idols and boxes, the story will unfold in the form of letters, telegrams, and postcards.
I wanted all the rewards to fit into the narrative in some way that would make sense and be fun. I also want to make sure that they could cover the cost of production and shipping without being too expensive.
Museum microfilm archival collection
The simplest reward is a fun and quick one that, once the project is funded, I can deliver immediately, which I'm excited to produce. It's wrapped in the guise of archival microfilm so that it will fit into the narrative. It will be a collection of wall papers for your computer and cell phone plus a recording of the infamous Cthulhu chant formatted so that it can be a ringtone!
A set of 5 postcards from the main story locations that Gideon will travel to. These will make up some of the key story elements of the narrative, although there will be supplemental letters and telegrams as well. These will be sent to you in the mail over the course of the production so it will allow the story to unfold as a live event.
The poster is done in an Art Nouveau style and emulates the beautiful style of Alphonse Mucha. I wanted to create an entire world for the idols to live in, and during the course of the narrative, Gideon will come across an artist in Rhode Island who has a gallery showing off his Cthulhu art work from all his dreams. The artist is of course Henry Wilcox, from the short story Call of Cthulhu. The posters are 100lb gloss finish and24" x 32".
The Idols and Boxes
The idols are my own stylized interpretation of the one described in the short. I will be hand-making each idol, casting them in either cold cast bronze or limestone. I will also hand-paint the idols with the patina of unearthly alien time and age, and weathering them to help complete the illusion of the story. Each idol will come with a stylized hand-crafted box representative of the different locations in the story for the idol you choose.
There are two types of idols and three types of boxes.
The Large Idol stands 6" tall and about 2.5" wide.
- Cold cast Bronze
- Miskatonic University Museum Box 7.5" x 4" x 3.5"
- Shanghai Brocade Box 7.5" x 4" x 4"
- Cult Worshiper Box 12" x 8" x 4.5"
It's my goal to have everything completed and mailed out within 6 months of the project's successful funding, but this may change depending on how many total idols are commissioned.
So why Kickstarter? I have discovered so many amazing artists, projects and fantastic endeavors on Kickstarter that I doubt I would have found anywhere else,And so, I thought this would be an excellent venue in which to attempt to share my vision.
Risks and challenges
So where will your money be going? I can appreciate the worry about giving out money for a project that looks awesome, there is always that risk. I want to set those worries aside. I have already built all the boxes and idol variations and they can be seen in the images above. I have developed a workflow and already know the issues I will run into and how to knock it out of the park. Now it's just a matter of making more of them for all of you. and that's where your money comes into play. As you can see all the art work exists, I've built them and I think they look awesome, hopefully you will as well. So the money raised for the project would go towards acquiring the tools and supplies I would need to help share my idol narrative idea with others on a larger scale than I am currently capable of. Now each Idol and box is hand built so I've tried to take time into account with out having you wait to long, but if there are and production hangups ill be sure to let you know as soon as they present.
It's my hope that people will truly enjoy this experience and I will be able to share it with even more people who may discover this after the Kickstarter is funded.
