I don't resist the pleasure to show you my ingame favorite unit. In battle, this single unit, available to Eastern Rome from Turn 8 onwards is a cavalry, an archer, heavy and elite...a super all-in-one versatile unit.

“But Byzantine generals did not rely too much on masonry. The heavy armed horse-archer remained the real defense of the Empire. His mail shirt hung from neck to thighs, with gauntlets and steel shoes completing the armor. All active branches of the service wore the conical Byzantine helmet, tufted in various colors to distinguish units. The horses of frontrank men were furnished with frontlets and poitrels, and the well-built saddle had steel stirrups. Broadsword, dagger, lance, bow and quiver were the trooper’s weapons. He was issued a light linen surcoat to wear over his armor in fair weather, in addition to a woolen cloak strapped behind his saddle for protection against cold. The lance-pennon and surcoat, like the tuft of the steel helmet, were of various distinguishing colors” – Lynn Montross, War Through the Ages (1960).

Which ones do you have in mind exactly? The "Into the East" expansion will take care of a few of them, but I may have missed some...

The "in-betweener" empires of Central Asia don't get enough representation in gaming. Really looking forward to them here.
