Who, What & Why?
‘Gone Dark’ is the result of a fruitful partnership between the actress Nansi Nsue (IMDB page) and the creative director Charles H. Joslain (site & reel). Drawn from personal experiences and the testimonies of many others, ‘Gone Dark’ has been written to bring awareness to the issue of abusive relationships and how vulnerable people, teens and adults alike, can sometimes be subtly manipulated without them even realizing it for a very long time before an eventual ‘dawn’ which can leave deep emotional scars; or worse in the most extreme cases.
Nansi has decided to take the lead in our effort and has already pledged a contribution of £3000, enough to make the film but really just… And only by asking a lot of favors from friends (locations, equipment, etc…) An important reason for this KS campaign is to hopefully double our present budget once all the Kickstarter fees are paid, and then use the full budget to make the film with a little more flexibility and comfort (i.e. spreading the shoot over 7 or 8 days instead of 4 truly intense ones). But you should know that Nansi, Charlie, Alex (producer) as well as our key crew members have all agreed to do the project pro-bono given the quality of the script & the importance of the subject.
So where will the money go?
Building on the previous paragraph, we intend to keep a sizable chunk of our backers’ contributions to promote ‘Gone Dark’ via the short film festival circuit. Film festivals sound fun on paper but they are actually a LOT of work, requiring press packages, plenty of photographs/art work and of course: admission fees. The more visibility the festival, the better for the film but also, the greater the investment of time and resources. We believe we have a realistic chance of projecting ‘Gone Dark’ to the Cannes, Raindance and Berlin festivals; hence why we’re aiming to be ready with everything for Christmas.
What makes this campaign & project genuinely unique?
As you probably noticed in the video, and as you will see with our regular updates on Facebook and Twitter, we have decided as a team to try something really new which nobody has every tried before. No seriously! Taking our KS campaign ‘offline’ and onto the street of our city.
We have now spent a full weekend around Soho in London, introducing ourselves personally to random Londoners and visiting foreigners too of course, and our efforts have paid off: over 350 email addresses have been collecting, reflecting the diversity of London and the interest for ‘Gone Dark’ and its theme. We are truly grateful to all of you who listened to us kindly when nothing forced you too :)
We will keep scouting for more backers in the following weekends, until the end of this campaign on August 1st. So please help us by liking our Facebook page, following us on Twitter, and making a donation here if you can.
Finally, please KEEP IN MIND the main reason for this campaign & project: the stronger the following we create online, the likelier we are to achieve TRUE visibility; that is getting ‘Gone Dark’ projected in middle schools/high schools as an educational effort to warn teenagers of the dangers of online predators and abusive relationships.
We thank you wholeheartedly for your interest and support, in whatever shape it may take. We will keep you all posted with our ‘Gone Dark’ adventure!
Since we launched our campaign, we have been honored to receive the Achievement in Screenwriting award for the 'Gone Dark' script from the Hollywood International Moving Picture Film Festival!
