The maker of the Leonardo Da Vinci Tarot Deck brings the all new David Bowie Tarot
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hello!! Some of you may know me through my cosplay and working at conventions, my modeling page, my blog, or maybe you just found this listing on your own on kickstarter! I work with The Shoggoth Assembly and we have tables at tons of conventions in the New England area including, Portcon (which I also staff at), Bangor Toy and Comic Con, Granite State Comic Con, and for the first time this year NecronomiCon and coming up this fall we'll be going to Rock and Shock and BanGoreFest both for the first time!
I've always had a love for art, whether its drawing, painting, sculpture, music, or digital art. I started taking digital art classes at a community college in 2013, while I was still a junior in high school. I'm currently a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School and the last few years I've been working with The Shoggoth Assembly learning special effects make up and prop making.
Almost exactly a year ago now I was sitting in a photoshop class and bored out of my mind because I kept finishing all of the assignments too fast and too easily, so I started a project for myself. I wasn't getting graded or getting any credits for this but I designed a complete tarot deck based on the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. This project was super helpful to me, not just for helping me learn things in photoshop in my own way and challenging myself, but I was also learning to read tarot myself around this time and through making a deck and focusing on each card specifically it helped me learn each of their meanings.
Another thing I feel is important to add to this description of myself is my absolute love and adoration of David Bowie. He's been one of my biggest idols for as long as I can remember. For an artistic young person whose everchanging, it makes sense to have a love for Bowie, a chameleon himself. I've done make up like Bowie countless times, dressed up as him for halloween, got a record player just so I could listen to Bowie vinyls (although I have a few other things too), I've written about him and could talk about him and his influence not only on myself but music and the world itself. I would definitely go as far as to say Bowie and his music has saved me and helped me through so much. My love for Bowie goes as far as that in October of 2014 I got a tattoo of a portrait of his Ziggy Stardust persona with lyrics from the song Rock n' Roll Suicide around it on my left forearm, a place chosen because it's close to my heart.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
So clearly you can see the love I have for Bowie and Tarot and combining the two of them has been one of my dreams since before I even made my first deck, I just knew I'd need more practice before I could get to the point where I felt skilled enough and comfortable enough to start this project. I started doing layout sketches of the major arcana on the weekend of Necronomicon and showing of my sketches to a few people there was great because I could already see just from that there was interest in this besides my own.
Since then, I have worked on more layout sketches and eventually I finished up the final designs of the entire major arcana and have been working my way through the minor arcana. Each card features a high contrast pop art image of David Bowie over extremely colorful "trippy" backgrounds that draw their themes not only from the meanings of the cards themselves but also the context of Bowie.
The major arcana inclues imagery from all different personas of Bowie, including film personas like Jareth from Labyrinth and Thomas Jerome Newton from The Man Who Fell to Earth. The minor arcana each foccus on a different time or era of Bowie. The Cups, which symbolize emotions and love, are young beginning Bowie from his start until 1971 when Hunky Dory was released. The wands symbolize creativity and will, which will be represented by the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane eras. The coins are symbolizing material body and belongings, showing Bowie's Thin White Duke era which is around 1975 and 1976. The final suit, the swords which stands for reason, will be shown by modern Bowie.
What do I need to raise money for?
My base goal is pretty low, just enough to get me the first batch of ten of the full tarot deck printed, as well as to get the other rewards for funders. Speaking of rewards....
What do you get for funding this project?
Rewards include bookmarks, pins, postcard size prints, poster size prints, a minor arcana only deck, and the full David Bowie Tarot deck. More details about prices and the levels can be seen to the right.
Compared to other kickstarter projects, my base goal of $650 isn't too much. If this project goes over the base goal, the extra money will be spent on buying more copies of the David Bowie Tarot for me to keep in stock and sell on my etsy and at conventions. If the amount of money raised gets to a certain point, additional bonuses will be added for funders.
If this project gets up to $1,300, double the original base goal, a 4.25"x4.25" saddle stitch binded booklet will be included with every full deck sold. This booklet will include descriptions of every card in the David Bowie Tarot with information about the cards themselves, their designs, and what the context of the Bowie pop art is based on.
At $2,500, a little under 4 times the base goal, every full tarot deck sold will no longer come in a plain white tuck box, but will now come in a glossy full color custom tuck box with new Bowie themed art different from all the cards.
Risks and challenges
There shouldn't be much as far as risks and challenges for this project. I have another tarot deck that I completely designed myself like this one that I've been selling on my etsy shop that has almost all five star reviews since November of 2014. I've sold many copies of the Leonardo Da Vinci Tarot Deck online as well as in person and at conventions so I have experience with selling them as well as getting my cards printed. The only possible delay or challenge that I've had experience with before is if I run out of my stock of cards and get orders before the new shipment has come in.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
