CALLIOPE: stop motion animated short film (Canceled)
A new fantasy adventure animated stop-motion short film from the minds of artists and toy designers, Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters.
Watch the original trailer:
Visionary creators from the world of designer toys (Circus Posterus’ toy designers Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters), stop-motion innovator and Annie Awards Special Achievement recipient Martin Meunier (Coraline), and filmmaker Jon Schnepp (The Death of 'Superman Lives; What Happened?) unite for an all new stop-motion short film, Calliope, and to offer exclusive Kickstarter rewards.
SMALL DESCRIPTION: Based on Kathie Olivas’ classic toy character Calliope Jackalope, Calliope is a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure stop-motion animated short film about an other-worldly girl who’s unaware that she’s actually Pestilence, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. If funded, Calliope will be written and co-directed by Olivas, Peters and Meunier (Coraline, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), executive produced by Schnepp (Metalocalypse and The Death of 'Superman Lives; What Happened?), and will feature artisans, animators, and fabricators that have worked on stop-motion features like The Nightmare Before Christmas.
In addition to the ambitious 8-10 minute animated stop-motion Calliope short, we will offer a Kickstarter exclusive graphic novel, a handmade Kickstarter exclusive Talking/ Spirit board and a Kickstarter exclusive oracle deck. Additional incentives include the production of new vinyl and resin characters and props to be featured in the film.
THE STORY: Calliope is a little girl who’s unaware that she is actually one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She sets up up an oracle stand at the end of the world to give readings to the world’s remaining inhabitants, who are all children. Each card Calliope pulls conjures up an alternate universe based on one Brandt Peters’ vintage-style underworlds. And then Slap-Happy, Stingy Jack, and the Skelves -- characters based on Peters’ popular toys--are unleashed on what remains of the world.
THE PROJECT: For the past 15 years, Olivas and Peters have been developing Calliope. Two years ago they met award winning filmmaker and visual effect/stop-motion artist, Martin Meunier and since then the three of them have tirelessly rewritten, sketched, developed characters, sculpted puppetry and environments, and done animation tests, in preparation to make the film.
Making a stop-motion film is a very slow process. Remember that it takes 24 frames or in this case 24 photographs to complete 1 second of film. With an 8 minute film and simple math, that's over 11,000 photos to complete this short. A long process. This film will also be worked on after hours and weekends so Martin, Kathie, and Brandt can fit it into their normal pre-existing schedule. It will be a labor of love for the three of them and the small dedicated crew coming aboard.
**** Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas will be providing and steering the visual concept & development, including: story-boards, character designs, environmental designs, graphics, props, costuming, production art, sculpting, painting and co-directing. All of the budget of this film will go to the Calliope short and its production team.
Prominent contemporary writers, artists, and stylists have also signed aboard on Calliope, including famed director/writer/producer Jon Schnepp; internationally recognized visual artist and creature designer Stan Manoukian (Paris); soft sculpture contemporary artist, Lana Crooks (Chicago); 3D modeler/Illustrator Dennis Cornetta (New England) who has worked with entertainment studios from Hasbro to Disney; and The Peculiar Pretzelmen, who will provide the short's sound effects and score.
Peters' and Olivas’ exclusive, limited edition, designer toys -- which are so in demand that their latest run of limited edition toys sold out across the nation in a couple of days -- play a big role in this campaign’s rewards. Available exclusively through this Kickstarter store are:
- A 4-figure mini toy set, fabricated by Cardboard Spaceship Toys, based on the second installment from next year’s Olivas-Peters imagined Wandering Misfits mini series II
- A brand new vinyl toy figure, also from Cardboard Spaceship, based on Peters’ Night King; an exclusive color design of the ‘Bat with a Secret Past’ from Peters’ Stingy Jack’s universe
- Olivas and soft sculpture/fine artist Lana Crooks’ micro-edition Calliope resin sculptures with fabric costuming
- Peters-designed toys manufactured in Japan by their toy partnership Tomenosuke + CP, hand airbrushed by Peters
- A handmade talking Spirit Board which allows you to play an interactive role in the Calliope story through Divination
- and a new Oracle Deck, like the one Calliope uses in the story's haunting nod to American Spiritualism
We need your help in accomplishing this epic project.
THE GOAL & WHY KICKSTARTER: The goal of the project is to raise enough capital to help produce and finance Calliope as an 8-10 minute stop-frame short film and to produce it by May 2017 (starting after the conclusion of this successful campaign) including its incentives.
Calliope is an Independent film, not backed by a major studio. The cost of stop-motion is not cheap. Even though it is animation, the process is very similar to live-action productions and just like many of those productions we have months ahead of us in building, renting, and operating. Money raised will be used to cover the practical costs of materials, fabrication and molds, camera and rig rental, armatures, building sets, lighting, puppets and animating characters frame by frame, costuming, editing and post effects, as well as studio rental space, etc. Your direct backing will finance the supplies needed to get this first chapter (as short film) completed.
This is the second time we are looking to the public to help fund a project, in an effort to help start connecting our fans directly to Circus Posterus's creative process. Kickstarter will allow us to all make this film together and have you directly join in on the process of filmmaking that is in danger of fading away. You as our backers are part of our crew and team. Your direct help will allow us to deliver our vision 100%.
FUTURE STRETCH GOALS: The campaign amount you see here is the absolute bare bones we need to get this production going and the full pitch. We already have stretch goals in mind to take this short from an 8 minute to a 10 minute short or more, allowing us to pull you further into our universe by revealing more of Brandt's universe and the world of Stingy Jack, which is already being developed. Please keep in mind that after fees, taxes and fulfillment, we will have significantly less than what will be shown as this campaign closes and why we need to push beyond what we are asking for.
Stretch goals will allow us to also push production values to rival or compete with major studios who rarely green light stop-motion productions. The more money we raise, the more quality and care we can put back into the short film, it's that simple.
IN CONCLUSION We cannot thank you enough, in advance, for supporting this project. Please continue to support Calliope by Tweeting and sharing this project on social media. Join our conversation on Twitter and Facebook.
Without you, none of this would be possible!
Risks and challenges
RISKS AND CHALLENGES: Based on the creative team’s collective history in film making, production, and commercial art, the risks and challenges of Calliope are minimal. The largest risk is completing the Calliope film within 16 months of this campaign’s completion -- timing which is also subject to hitting stretch goals. Stretch goal funding will enable the creators to increase the film’s length, push production values, and make a better film.
Circus Posterus Studios already fills international orders daily for vinyl toys, resin figures, limited edition prints, postcard sets, and more, so incentives will be swiftly and easily dispatched to backers via the following carriers: USPS (for small packages and International) / UPS "ground" for larger domestic packages.
