About this project
Over the last year Project Pigeon has been working on The Birmingham Pigeon Archive, an archive about the history and culture of pigeon fancying in Birmingham. We have been working with writer Mandy Ross who has written three radio plays based on material collected for the archive (oral histories and videos). Project Pigeon wants to rework the plays to be performed live by actors from RoguePlay Theatre at Project Pigeon’s loft/ site. This would be the first ever piece of theatre performed at a pigeon loft.
The plays contain many fascinating and funny stories from the archive. John wanted pigeons so much that when he was a young lad he coaxed one of his neighbours pigeons into a little hutch he made and dyed it purple so that his neighbour wouldn't recognise it. Bernard and Betty Hemming found love through pigeons, Bernard was watching some pigeons fly during his lunch break at the tool factory where he worked when a colleague saw him and said ‘you don't keep pigeons do ya?!’, this lad did and Bernard was invited to his house to see his pigeons, Betty was this lads sister and two years later Betty and Bernard married. Then there is the darker side of pigeon racing, the rivalry, the cheating and the money.
The plays will be brought alive through theatre, enabling the scene to be set and characters developed in a way not possible through radio.
In addition, Project Pigeon has just moved to a new space and this would be the first public event at the new space.
Risks and challenges
The plays will be performed in April 2013 in the hope that the weather will be decent. With some of the funds Project Pigeon will build a shelter for the audience to protect them from the rain. We will also request that people wear warm & waterproof clothes.
Organising and planning the event:
Project Pigeon will be working in collaboration with Rogue Theatre and writer Mandy Ross, together we have the skills and expertise to make this a fantastic experience.
