Alphabet of the Other Childhood is an art book I have had in mind for a long time.
It takes a familiar token from childhood, the alphabet book, and uses it to explore the messier aspects of our early years.
Childhood is a well I return to again and again in my creative life. I work with children and find early development fascinating. Kids are brand new people trying to absorb and make sense of the world around them. I feel very lucky to get to watch this happening on a daily basis.
I'm also interested in the ways in which we remember our own childhoods. Memory is an imperfect record expanded or constricted by the various emotions attached to it.
Our cultural ideas of childhood are very idyllic, but when I remember my own, it is the visceral emotions that come to me; the sadness and curiosity of seeing the vacant eye of a dead bird, the thrill of stealing something and the shame that followed it, or just the loneliness of playing alone with dolls.
Those images are far from idyllic, but to me that makes them more beautiful and felt.
This project is a chance to explore and express my feelings surrounding the subject.
If I get my funding I will be working on this project full time for the whole of July.
The images here on this page represent my test drawings which were done at the conception of the idea. They are here to give you the shape of the idea. My style has evolved in the time since they were made, and so I will be starting from scratch with all new drawings.
Right now the goal is to complete it and create a tangible finished project. I plan to self publish the book through lulu.com in August, but, I will definitely also be looking into traditional publishing possibilities when all aspects of this project are completed.
Deadlines on reward production and delivery are built into the individual write ups. I plan to have all rewards fulfilled by October 1, 2013 at the latest.
Important Reward Info!
The $30 pledge gets you a Haiku Review. So what are my Haiku Reviews anyway?
Well, I watch a movie or TV show and then I do my best to distill the experience down into it's most basic essence in the form of a haiku.
Sometimes they're really genuine...
Sometimes the material doesn't warrant that...
Another $30 pledge reward is a digital portrait from the photo of your choosing.
Here are some examples of digital portraits I've done for other folks.
And finally, a pledge at $200 recieves a song written for the uke about whatever WHATEVER YOU WANT!
But of course why would you want that without hearing a song I've written? AMIRITE?!
Here's a video from a past life where I am performing a song I wrote about being disturbed by a fellow commuter's depressing outfit.
Skip to the 1:30 mark to get (past the copious awkward banter to the song!I've gotten a few inquiries about international shipping. I put US only because I wasn't sure how much it would cost to ship internationally, but I don't want to leave anyone out so I have decided to do it. I can't edit the rewards at this point, but if you need international shipping on a book or poster please just add $7 to your pledge to cover it.
Risks and challenges
The only challenges I foresee are in going through the printing process as this is the first time I will be printing a project of this size.
I plan on blogging throughout the whole project and giving lots of updates if any unforeseen technical hang ups occur.
The only other risk will be a sore hand from all the drawing!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
