About this project
Hey Friends, thanks for stopping by our Kickstarter page!
If you don’t already know about us, we've been making country rock music for the past six years as Tom Huebner and The Real Deal and as the acoustic americana duo Of Like Mind. We’re dropping all that to simply be The Real Deal from now on. The Real Deal is original country rock featuring compelling harmonies and original songwriting layered with a guitar driven hard rock sound. Here’s what reviewers said about the music from Tom's first CD release, Highway 43, out on Camel Records:
“A classically-styled, no-nonsense set of good rockin’ tonight songs” – “Music like this forms the backbone of Americana and rightly so” – “Well worth a listen.” - Jeremy Searle, Americana.UK
“Songwriting with interesting topics – and minimal cliches - not a single filler track” – Jose Segue, hickswithsticks.com
Hey, if it's not fun, then why do it? Music is all we've ever wanted to do and over the years we've been in a lot of bands, but we've settled in with The Real Deal, where we've found the perfect outlet for the songs we're writing. Plus, we get to play a whole lot of rock and roll, which ain't a bad thing!
Tom is from Arizona and Southern Cal with varied musical influences like tex mex, country, and blues rock that fuse to make The Real Deal's unique sound. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dottie is a talented performer with the ability to win over any room! She credits Lucinda Williams, k.d. lang and Robert Plant as major vocal influences.
Together, we'll pull you in with our vocals and tight harmonies. You will hear songs that make you laugh a lot and cry a little, and maybe even want to have a drink and get up and dance! Uplifting, yet all about a good time, you won't want to miss a single Real Deal show. But the music will keep playing in your head - hence the reason for us to finally make the album of your dreams (and ours!).
So, what’s next and why should you contribute to this project? Well, of course there’s the swag – free CD’s, tee shirts, inclusion on the VIP guest list to the CD release party – even home concerts by The Real Deal! But apart from that, it’s your chance to become a part of the Real Deal's extended family that’s been growing across the country from Northern California to Nashville and a lot of places in between.
Between day-jobs and raising three kids, we've been laying the foundation for this project by putting aside money. Now we need your help to make our record a reality!
We've hired Screaming Lizard Productions, the dynamic duo of producer Andre Zweers and his wife and partner, sound engineer Judy Kirschner to produce this record. They are veterans of some stellar rock albums, including Supernatural by Carlos Santana (1999) and Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar and Joe Satriani (2009), working alongside producer and rock legend Andy Johns (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin). Andre and Judy have the creative fire and studio chops to get things done right and we are stoked to be working with them!
So here’s what your contribution will help us do:
1) Hire the best musicians around to make this record. 2) Book two days at Coast Studios, a top notch facility in San Francisco. We'll lay the groundwork for the album here, recording bass and drum tracks. 3) Continue recording sessions with Andre and Judy at Screaming Lizard Studios. 4) Mix-down with Judy – she’s got the great ear! 5) Post-production: Photography, graphics production and final CD pressing. 6) Extra money will go for album promotion and touring.
We are sincerely grateful for any contribution you can make to help us realize our dream of making a record we can be proud of – and one that you will enjoy for years to come!

Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges
Perhaps our biggest challenge will come AFTER we complete the album, when we set out to actually go about promoting it. It would be a shame to complete a great record that no one other than our friends and family get to hear. While we’re busy recording we will also be upgrading our marketing strategy, so that radio airplay, media reviews, touring schedule and distribution all are part of the equation. It really boils down to how we focus what resources we have in the best possible way to achieve the most exposure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
