Update: June 2, 2014
We did it! With just five days to go, we reached our funding goal, and the Aurora in Four Voices audiobook is fully funded! This thing is happening! A big thank you to everyone who pledged, posted, tweeted, suggested, or encouraged. You are the best, and I couldn't have done this without all of you!
If you haven't yet pledged but intended to, it's not too late! Don't forget the stretch goal: if we reach $9000 I will write a new Ruby Dynasty novella and make it available digitally to all backers at the $12 and up level prior to publication!
About this Project
When my short story Light and Shadow appeared in Analog Magazine (1994), it was my first published story. It was also began The Saga of the Skolian Empire, also known as the Ruby Dynasty series, which has grown to include at least 14 novels, plus several novellas and a number of short stories. Roland Green at Booklist described the series: "Asaro's portrait of interstellar intrigue, weird socio-political customs and galactic history has come to approach the neighborhood of such classics as Frank Herbert's Dune series."
In 2011, when I was a Guest of Honor at Windycon, they released a limited edition anthology to accompany my appearance. Published by ISFic Press, the anthology collects some of my novellas and short stories into one volume and is titled Aurora in Four Voices after the Hugo and Nebula nominated novella of the same name. The Nebula-award winning story "The Spacetime Pool" is also included in the anthology.
With the increasing popularity of audiobooks, I would like to have the Aurora in Four Voices anthology recorded as an audiobook for those who enjoy listening to stories. My experiences as a writer, dancer, actress, and singer have made me keenly aware of the different forms that storytelling can take, and a well-narrated audiobook adds new dimensions to a story. I'm excited for the opportunity to bring these stories to life in a new medium.
Progress So Far
We've made a great start on this project. I've been fortunate to find a fantastic narrator, Sylvia Roldán Dohi. You can hear a sample of her narration in the video above, and her bio is below. Sylvia has already begun recording. Once the recording is finished, it will need to be edited and produced into the final audiobook. We anticipate having the audiobook ready to send to backers within a one to two months after completion of the Kickstarter campaign.
Sylvia Roldán Dohi is a performing artist who transplanted herself from the beaches of Los Angeles to the energy of New York City. An exotic Eurasian, she’s defied classification throughout her successful career as an actor, singer, dancer, musician, coach and narrator. She started working as a child in Hollywood, and went on to perform in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States in both English and Spanish. She has appeared with a diverse range of recording stars and performers, including such legends as Alice Cooper - playing to audiences of up to 15,000 - and with Clarence Clemons (of E Street Band Fame), who selected her out of 1,500 hopefuls to be a featured singer with his band.
After touring the US in such shows as CATS and WEST SIDE STORY, Sylvia was called to Broadway as an original company member of MISS SAIGON, taking to the stage for the entire ten-year run of the show. Temporarily sidelined by a series of “dancer injuries,” she bounced back to play the Roller Derby Queen in the off-Broadway production of ROLLER DERBY: the Musical, and has been skating around Manhattan ever since. Her acting roles have run the gamut from prostitutes to queens, business mavens to shamans, as well as just ordinary folks of all nationalities. She has done Shakespeare, Shepard and MTV, and as a voice-over artist she has been featured on cartoons (Captain Kangaroo) and ad campaigns (SIEMPRE MUJER magazine, NJ Lotto). The New York Newspaper EL DIARIO has honored her as an Outstanding Woman of Hispanic Heritage, and the United Way selected her to be both the singer and spokesperson for their Asian/American promotion.
Ms. Roldán Dohi continues working in theater (musical and otherwise), film (the cult picture REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS), television (LAW & ORDER:SVU, THIRD WATCH, DAVID LETTERMAN), commercials (DISNEYLAND, DIET PEPSI), industrials, nightclubs, concerts, music videos and audiobooks. She has also worked as a choreographer, composer and director. She has narrated over 25 books for LEARNING ALLY (formerly Recording For the Blind and Dyslexic), and several books for Audible, Amazon and iTunes, including the SAMANTHA MOON:VAMPIRE FOR HIRE series by J.R. Rain, LIGHTENING FAST SPANISH by Carolyn Woods, and HAPPILY EVEN AFTER by Carole Brody Fleet.
Sylvia consistently pursues her creative visions with incredible passion, bringing her vast experience to every new project. She’s blessed to share her life with her partner, Eric Rath, a brave Traumatic Brain Injury survivor and talented actor in his own right.
What would a Kickstarter project be without stretch goals? The initial goal will provide enough funds to complete the audiobook, so what happens if we go past the initial goal?
Stretch Goal: $9000
If we reach $9000, I will write a new Ruby Dynasty novella. All backers at the $12 level and above will get a digital copy of it before it's published!
Stretch Goal: ????
I have some other ideas for stretch goals, so if we go past $9000 look here to see what comes next!
Risks and challenges
As with any project of this sort, there's always a risk that something will happen to prevent the project from being completed. However, in this case, the risks are very low because the project is so far along. I don't anticipate having any problems completing the project in time to send the audiobook to backers at the appropriate levels within a few months. If any problems should arise, I pledge to keep backers apprised of any changes.
There is some risk with being able to provide some of the higher level rewards. My travel to a specific location might be cancelled, for example, making it impossible for me to fulfill the "IN PERSON VISIT" reward. For Tuckerization, the name the backer submits might not fit with my story plans, or I might be unable to complete the story. If anything happens to prevent delivery of the rewards promised, I will refund the money to those backers affected.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
