By Sal Hendrie and illustrated by Thanh Vũ
When a young boy walking along a canal, befriends the Toad, magic intervenes as we follow their epic adventures in the underwater Kingdom of Canalia.
Three words could describe this story : poetry, paintings, philosophy.
This children's picture book is written in verse, turning the story into a dreamy melody. The drawings and colouring of the illustrations reveal strong attention to detail and mirror the soul of a painter. Children tend to share the most philosophical things, the Boy mirrors this view.
This is a story about dreams, friendship and the beauty of Nature: dreams about escaping our reality by traveling to unknown places and true friendship between the Boy and the Toad.
Finally, the invisible beauty of Nature unveiled in the Kingdom of Canalia: its inhabitants recycle the bikes-dumped in the canal- into energy to power their world.
When walking along a river, a canal, the sea, any possible stream, have you ever asked yourself : what lives there ? Maybe not !
Will the world hear about the Kingdom of Canalia ? It's really up to you !
The birth of the illustrations
In May 2018, I was living in Hanoï, Vietnam, when I decided to have the story illustrated. After getting in contact with Nguyễn Thanh Vũ from Lá Studio in Saigon, I realized that he was the perfect match...
The book is 100 % finished! As soon as the campaign is hopefully funded, we'll go to print! The illustrations in this book were created using digital media after pencil sketching. Here are some steps describing the production process :
And here are the final illustrations for the beginning of the story with Sal's dreamy poem :
A Boy was peacefully walking along a canal
The birds were dreaming on a day so banal
His eyes looked down at the murky blue water
As his feet got closer and his toes wider and wider
The Boy could not resist the call of the Toad
For he was all alone on this solitary road
Enchanted by the creature, he got down on his knees
He bowed his head over the edge and threw away his keys
A trout family halted and stared as they swam by
For the Toad was leading his friend, yet still no one knew why
Down into the abyss where no humans were to be found
Existed a gate with no keeper around
These giant steel sculptures have poured since our beginning
The boy was lost, so his head started spinning
His dear friend the toad noticed his fatigue
He had seen himself with pearly little eyes
As the long-awaited king, young but wise
Ever since the boy had been crowned in euphoria
Days had gone by in the Kingdom of Canalia
This fabulous land was thus beautifully named
Sad faces had turned joyful, gone was past pain

WHAT TO CHOOSE
THE AUTHOR: Sal Hendrie was born in Paris, France, in 1994. After living most of his life in the French capital, he moved to Berlin to study music and literature. The following year, he moved to Leiden, a charming Dutch town boasting many canals. That is where The Boy and The Toad came to life. A year later, while living in Hanoi, Vietnam, he got in touch with Nguyễn Thanh Vũ, and asked him if he would like to illustrate the story.
THE ILLUSTRATOR: Nguyễn Thanh Vũ is an illustrator at Lá, a small studio located in Saigon (Vietnam). His hobby consists in searching for fun things to do rather than focusing on his on-going job. He has the amazing talent of distraction. He is currently learning to become an amateur carpenter.

Reaching 3900 € is definitely not an easy challenge but we're hoping you can make this dream come true :)
This Kickstarter will allow me to print an initial run of 500. With this stock, I will ship the books ordered through Kickstarter pledges, and with the remaining units I am hoping to distribute it in bookstores and on my future online store.
The costs are justified by the weight + dimensions + location + tracking of the shipment.
Tracking adds costs but it's an absolute necessity, as I want to make sure the rewards are delivered to you.
- European-Union Based Backers :
It is cheaper to ship within the European Union (6€ which should be around £ 5 for backers in the U.K).
- International Backers :
If you are living elsewhere in the world, the shipping is slightly higher (7 € so around 8 $)
Risks and challenges
THE BOOK IS 100 % done.
All we need is your contribution to print the books and then ship them to you!
The budget covers book printing, postage, packaging, Kickstarter/processing fees.
I have set the goal at 3900 € (which accommodates for a scenario: people pledging solely for the lower tiers and shipping being heavily in favour of International).
This Kickstarter edition will be the only opportunity to get this 1st crowdfunded edition of the book signed by the author.
I would like to emphasize that you will be treated as a close friend and I will reply to any of your queries.
Feel free to spread the word, thank you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
