A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We are pleased to introduce Formid, an innovation in seating that will challenge the physical inactivity of the workplace. Formid is the ultimate combination of active seating, made-to-measure paper structures and connected digital-physical feedback. Formid will reshape the way we sit for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
Formid allows you to circulate blood by bending at the largest joint on the human body, the hips. By creating a full range of motion in all directions, your hips can move, muscles can flex and/or relax to maintain stability and rest, thus promoting blood flow to previously inactive areas of the body. The free space under and around Formid invites you to explore a higher degree of bodily variation, and the seat allows you keep your spine aligned with gravity for prolonged comfort, regardless of hip placement.
With 360 degrees of motion, Formid makes being active as easy as sitting down.
After moving from a physically active career in construction to an architectural office - joints seized, muscles tensed, and circulation slowed to an all time low. After investigating long-term implications of sedentary behaviour, it became clear that this was a global epidemic. The World Health Organization has classified physical inactivity as one of the leading risk factors for death worldwide. (WHO World Inactivity Map).
When you buy a Formid you are receiving a custom piece of furniture for competitive retail pricing. This does the work of an occupational therapist that can cost hundreds an hour to assess and correct your posture. When your chair is tailored to you the work is already done and you body does the rest.
International inactivity costs have been estimated in the following Lancet article. Now predict if time will be needed to manage one or more of these health impacts. What are the costs associated with that time is? Is there strain on your productivity and quality of life to manage them? How does this compare to the cost of an active seat?
We can’t predict your specific circumstances but we are personally in favour of a preventative approach. With so many others facing a career that is dependent on sitting, an idea was born. We believe that movement while sitting should be healthy, liberating and beautiful.
An active counterweight chair, but made of stationary. Magic paper.
Someone as unique as you deserves a chair made with yourmeasurements.
We’re as concerned with you as we are with Earth so we’re working towards zero waste production.
Automated customizable nudges are a helpful reminder to keep you healthy and active throughout the day. (Stretch goal)
Track your long term seating patterns and set your own goals with the Formid App. (Stretch goal)
Formid is designed, tested, and built in the Great White North. We are proudly Canadian.
We think Formid fits into many workplaces.
Like at your office.
For precise work.
Enjoying a hobby.
For stretching in place.
On a variety of floor surfaces.
Our electronics module also unlocks a world of possibility in the digital realm including virtual reality entertainment. For example, your precise position can be tracked in correlation with the headset and controllers.
One little idea at a time gradually added up to where we are now. After we combined, distilled and revised the idea, we submitted for patents and we are now sharing the idea with you. We plan to keep on improving the product and look forward to your feedback as we get ready for shipments.
We've got the science behind the tailored fit, but the first step in creating a Formid starts with you. By adding your measurements to our online interface, we calculate the specific dimensions in each component of your seat. From here, we can create a seat specific to your body relying most on your bone structure. Because the central void of the seat accommodates your hip bones, it allows full range of motion and also distributes pressure where you need it.
Once your measurements are compiled, we translate them into a 3D parametric program to calculate every component of your chair down to the millimetre.
While we have a recommended optimal fit for your body, we can tweak the ideal body measurements to also fit your specific workplace.
We then structurally analyze each chair to make sure it is strong enough to support up to 250 lbs. This way, your weight can fluctuate and anyone else can try sitting down on it even if it isn't tailored to them.
From there, the information is sent straight to the CNC to cut our FSC Rainforest Certified paper.
The CNC ensures precision and dramatically reduces customization timelines for each seat. It also ensures that the information you've provided results in the most accurate seat for you, at the lowest price possible.
All that's left is to fold it, shred it, glue it, pack it, clamp it, and cast it.
We want to support the Earth as much as we support you, so we reuse the excess paper and tubes offcuts as a key part of the structure. Our focus of building with paper is how we want to see sustainable production grow by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere.
Formid is waste conscious, but it also has to be durable. Through material tests and our patent pending system, we've figured out how to make folded paper combined with paper leftovers as strong as wood. This ensures structurally sound connections.
Each Formid is hand finished using a unique dye-glue mixture. This ensures that each one is water repellent and has a uniform colour and luster.
It all comes together at the counter weighted spherical base. Hand cast using a combination of concrete, metal, and a heavy mining waste product called slag, it's got just enough weight to stand up on its own. Concrete can be pretty tough on floors, so we include a replaceable polyurethane cap to protect your floor, your Formid, and provide a lasting grip on any surface.
We've taken the seat 90% of the way, and the cushion is the final 10%. Support and input generated from the campaign will go towards a finalized cushion design. We want each seat to be custom cut to fit you, your Formid, and built to be comfy not only throughout the day, but the entire life of your Formid.
At 100 units sold, we will unlock the ability to buy the electronics unit for Formid. We need your help to make this module a reality, above you can see current progress on the project!
The Formid App will track your movements and nudge you if you're not moving enough, if it's time to stand up, or let you know if you've drifted too far. The removable module is rechargeable and communicates via bluetooth with your Formid App.
We need to isolate the financial support for the electronics so that we can guarantee minimum orders of the components and App development. All Formid's are designed to accept this hardware so if you've already supported us without electronics, you will be able to upgrade easily later on. Don't worry, if we don't reach this target on kickstarter we will still make sure your custom seat is compatible with the electronics module for the near future.
We are also working on bio-mechanics research that will help us discover more about how Formid can help you. The app with be updated as our growing academic research team find more health benefits. The system will become more intelligent offering better and better advice as we grow.

- The Formid Team
Developing a new and unconventional product inherently brings unique tests and challenges with each step forward. Kickstarter is our next step to bringing Formid to life and these are the hurdles we're anticipating:
Humanoid Circumvolution Paradox: We've felt the high achievement of a 360 and are committed to exploring the limits of the human form. Is it even possible? Will the completion of a 720 bring only cheers? Or is it the key to unbound clean energy the world over, or the ascension to the astral plane?
Risks and challenges
There can always be unforeseen challenges when it comes to producing a product. Of course, we plan on being completely transparent with our backers should anything go awry. And while our design team might use discretion to make any tweaks during production that amplify the function, durability, or aesthetic of the seat — you can rest assured, we're deeply committed to and excited about delivering a world-class product that we know you'll enjoy for a long time to come.
