About this project
Thank you to the Atlanta-based cosplayers (see PSA credits) who volunteered their experiences and insight!
Homeworld: Color, Cons, & Cosplay will follow five scifi enthusiasts over the course of Dragon Con 2017 weekend. These five cosplayers stem from all walks of life, finding a commonalty in spending most of their time becoming the images they seldom see in film and TV.
In most cases outside of your immediate community, being a person of color is the automatic odd man out. Our cosplayers are hoping to spend Labor day weekend as characters they’ve watched since being kids -- indulging in nerdy activities, judgement free.
But what really happens when you don’t share the same skin tone, hair pattern, or hollywood attraction as these cartoons or fictional characters? What happens when even a “nerdy” sanctuary is not a sanctuary for you?
While scifi entertainment has made strides to include more diverse casts, the scifi community and many POC communities still operate under the notion that scifi is a whites' only space.
These talented, young, POC, scifi enthusiast are here to challenge that ideology. From cosplay prep to road trips through the south, viewers will get a chance to see what it means to be a nerdy POC. Our participants get ready in their homes across the US . They put the finishing touches on their cosplay, they pack their 4 days and 5 nights worth of scifi t-shirts, and more.
And even though their excitement is through the roof, there is still a moment before diving head first into con where they reflect on those who have and have not supported their journey.
But now they are here! Dragon Con 2017 will be the true testament to inclusiveness in the midst of this current political season.
Will even the white nerds turn them away? Will Dragon Con try to hush any overtly POC inclusive advocates? Will they stand in the face of a MAGA “superhero”?
Only time will tell.
Through this film we see how cultural upbringing lays the foundation for our interests and how far society lets us take those interests.
This is how we push to have diverse casts with quality character development. This is how we combat the idea of being an "other" in a space where yes you are the minority but you play just as major of a role as anybody else.
Experts in science and psychology will illustrate the necessity of diversity. Celebrity scifi characters of color will reflect on what it means to be the representation everyday POC need. And we will find out whether Dragon Con is a place our participants come back to.
Your financial support of this films helps cover everything from pre-production to post. We want to get the image and audio as clear and as crisp as possible to stream on all platforms. Dragon Con does not permit the selling of footage captured during the event. Because of this, the film will be free to stream, share, and download by April 2018.
Throughout the course of crowd raising, weekly videos with Georgia-based cosplayers will be available through the film's Facebook page.
Risks and challenges
The scale and professionalism of this film comes at an extremely low-budget but still a hefty financial cost. Kickstarter really is an all or nothing deal. There are already so many people who want to see this film happen, who want to be involved in the film, but who also understand at this point it comes down to funding. Scripts are done. Main characters have been contacted. Locations have been scouted. Video and audio crew members are just waiting for the thumbs up. We're ready to do this thing!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
