Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance return to Turks and Caicos 10 years later to inspire the children of the island.

Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance return to Turks and Caicos 10 years later to continue their mission to inspire and thrill the children of the island with their unique, energetic dance form for the Friends of the Arts’ 10th Anniversary Gala Celebration. The Turks and Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation (TCFAF) is trying to raise the money to bring Rasta and his 9 dancers down to their islands to do a 10th Anniversary show in May. The focus of their trip back to TCI will be to connect with the children of the island, who get very little opportunity to see professional dancers of that caliber perform live.

During the week from May 14 to 20, Rasta and his company of 9 dancers will give master classes, company classes, outreach workshops on his innovative choreography, and create a new original piece collaborating once again with our local artists, all culminating in a grand finale performance. All the while, we will be recording the trip, the classes, interviews with the artists and the local children, and the performances on the island, with the end goal of producing a documentary DVD to give to our backers and to memorialize this event.

The Turks and Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation (http://TCFAF.wordpress.com/) was formed in February 2002 with the sole mission of bringing the Performing and Visual Arts to Turks and Caicos. On June 6, 2002, the newly formed TCFAF brought young dancers Rasta Thomas, Adrienne and Ashley Canterna, Danny Tidwell, and Robbie Nicholson in to perform a most ground-breaking and eclectic show never yet seen on the island, collaborating with our own local artists for a mix of classical and contemporary dance, African drumming, folk dance and story-telling. In the last 10 years, TCFAF has continued its mission and has produced over 60 original shows with mostly local volunteers and international artists donating their time to work with and inspire our island youth.

TCFAF is asking for donations on Kickstarter to pay for the airfare to bring the 9 dancers + the technical crew down to Providenciales, out of pocket expenses to feed and house the company, and fees for a videographer to film, edit, and produce the documentary.

FAQ

  • Create the Magic . . . Build a Dream . . . Become a Friend

TCFAF is an all volunteer, not for profit organization founded in 2002, who is always looking for those special individuals who would like to contribute their time, talent, ideas, energy, funds or experience to promoting the Arts in our community. Our mission is to promote a heightened appreciation of the Performing and Visual Arts, through Encouragement, Entertainment, and Education.

Encourage a dream, opening eyes and hearts to the diversity of the Arts

Our encouragement programme is multi-faceted. When possible, we facilitate local drama, music and dance groups to stage their own performances or help their members pursue a serious course of study in one of the recognized artistic disciplines. This may include: scholarships, providing contacts in their area of interest, coaching, choreography, building stage sets, and assisting with lighting and sound for productions. We also provide resources such as musical instruments, arts and crafts supplies, and costumes. We provide the means of publicizing for a project by providing the graphics for flyer and programme design, and arranging media interviews for directors and cast members. When the production is nearing public performance, we help with the printing and selling of tickets and always provide volunteers to run the front of house for a performance. To date, we have assisted in the production of over 12 local performances and as well, put on over 60 of our own shows. We are proud to announce that in our first ten seasons we have been able to give back to the community over $500,000 in financial aid, which include on-going scholarships to our youth in music, voice, theatre and dance.

Entertain everyone on the island, local, expatriate, young and old

Our Entertainment efforts provide a showcase where national and international performers can share their talents with all who live in and/or visit the Turks and Caicos Islands. In many instances, international artists of the highest caliber work alongside our local artists. Additionally, many of our entertainment events are coupled with an outreach programme that expose our children to the Performing Arts such as: classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz and world music, African drumming, African dance, Broadway, tap dancing, poetry, gospel, rap, pantomime, drama, and comedy; art forms they may have never seen before. Our Entertainment efforts also provide the funds needed for our other two mechanisms: Education and Encouragement.

    Educate, offering opportunities to all

Our educational programmes include workshops, seminars, dance, music and drama classes, and set and costume design. We have locally introduced over 1000 children to the Performing Arts through dance, music & drama workshops and demonstration classes given at the Sports Centre and the main Performing Arts centre, Brayton Hall. In some instances, children attending the workshops had the opportunity to perform at Brayton Hall along with seasoned performers.

We hope that the TCFAF can engage our children, broaden their views to the possibilities of many methods of expression, excite their curiosity and encourage their experimentation with different art forms. Our goal is to promote and contribute to the culture of the Turks & Caicos Islands as well as encourage all citizens to discover other cultures through the Performing and Visual Arts.
