Law Paths - An "Ace Attorney" Tribute
Law Paths is a graphic novel with a storyline with darker twists, similar to the "Choose Your Own Adventure" style books from the 80's
Chances are that when you see Law Paths, it's going to seem familiar to you. It's true, we're not going to hide it; the inspiration for this game comes from the world renowned CAPCOM "Ace Attorney" saga that we love playing.
But it isn't just a simple copy. As "Ace Attorney" fans, we wanted to pay tribute to a genre by developing our own game of high standards with the same playable base but with new elements that separate it from its inspiration and make it unique.
Law Paths is a graphic novel with storyline with darker twists, bringing back the addicting "Choose Your Own Adventure" style books made famous in the 80s. Players can forge their own paths in the law field, by being a Paladin of Justice, always bringing the truth to light, or conversely, by hiding the truth and attempting to manipulate verdicts in exchange for bribes.
Law Paths has a sci-fi theme and it plays in a not so distant future where some alien devices have been found in international waters. The devices seem to be able to allow for mind control and rumors speculate that with them even time travel is possible, so a new cold war rages over the control of the devices.
It is in this political and social environment where our young lawyers who have recently graduated begin their career in the law field and their decisions will determine their path.
They will fight alongside governments and corporations for private control of the devices, to shape the world in their vision, or they will become paladins of justice, bringing freedom to the common man.
Players actions will take them on various cases to work and end up in a total of 6 different endings.
More characters and full info about them coming soon in future updates
This game is a graphic novel with a lot of interaction and mystery solving by the players. We took the same playable base from our inspiration game, the “Ace Attorney” saga, but with new elements that offer something unique.
Law Paths includes a “Karma System” that measures the players actions and decide the path in the game story. Players can choose what they want to be as lawyers. In this way, we take our own separate path away from the CAPCOM model of Phoenix Wright and his unwavering defense of the truth, which only has one linear story.
In Law Paths, we want to offer the player a number of stories and possible endings, which are based on the player's decisions. For example, if the player chooses to be a corrupt attorney, they could be fired from their current job and hired by another firm, where their ex-coworkers could turn into rivals in the courtroom.
We've also added an attribute system that gives an RPG feel to the game, where various strategies exist to win a case and different rewards are given based on performance.
Players have points to customize their character, and they can choose to have more reputation (life) or more intuition (hint system). Also, with the score system, players will earn money to spend on courses and studies to get more points to customize their profiles.
The player can personalize the characteristics however they want, and doing so will affect the gameplay. Here are some examples: If the ability to speak in public (assertiveness) is improved, reputation (life) will also increase and more mistakes during the trial are permitted. If intuition is increased instead, more information will be obtained from the testimonies and the hint system can be used more times.
The player’s performance during trials will be scored and their score (in-game money) can be used to improve the player’s profile even further. The “Attitude system” allows the player to choose how they express themselves and communicate in the courtroom, varying the information obtained when pressure is put on a witness and will also impact the Karma.
Soon we will create an update where we explain each of the unique features of the game.
We hope that Law Paths will become a Trans-media product and we’d like to develop other entertainment products related with the brand. One of these is a comic that continues the adventures of Justin and Alice.
1) $18,000 – We release the complete game by Q4 2017
2) $28,000 – We know that Nintendo is a separate case, but we’d like to publish on the console that gave rise to the saga that our tribute is based on. The extra money from this goal will be invested in a license and development kit to publish on Nintendo systems.
3) $40,000 – Law Paths will offer 5 cases, 5 different stories with a plot line in common, but we’ve thought up and designed many more that we’ve been forced to cut out of the final version. If we reach this objective, we will release 4 additional cases as downloadable content.
The game will aim to be launched on Steam and if possible, on PlayStation and/or Xbox.
At the moment, a demo for the PC is ready to play. Download it here: Law Paths Tutorial Case - PC Version
Risks and challenges
Why we are seeking funding
There are two reasons for why we are looking for funding, the first being to gain recognition and motivation. A project like this one, a result of our passion of videogames and storytelling, requires a lot of time and effort. Without support and recognition, it’s complicated to enter into the market.
For this reason, we’re hoping for a moderate success story that puts our game into the spotlight, allows us to get the greenlight from Steam and to pay a few bills while we finish developing the game.
The other reason is more traditional, to be able to pay some collaborators involved in the creation of the game that are not part of our team: the artist in charge of creating 3D scenes for the locations and the musician who created the wonderful game melodies.
Other smaller expenses exist, like the purchase of software licenses and an investment in marketing.
For these reasons, the $18,000 target has been set, with the estimate for the game to be ready is in the last quarter of 2017.
The only risk / challenge we think we could face is to not be able to obtain the Steam Greenlight. In that case, we will try to invest in a marketing campaign that improves our odds, or to seek a publisher partner to release the game with.
Also, a low reception of our game may delay our estimated release, mainly because we will be busy with other jobs, but we are determined to release the game no matter what.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
