About this project
Time Wanderer is a breathtaking action RPG in 2 dimensions filled with puzzles, dynamic combats and lots of exploration, all within the realm of an emotional science fiction story.
Players take on the role of Corina, a girl who gets “lost” in time and wander with her throughout different historical moments of humanity as she searches for a way back to her own timeline to fulfil her mission, while avoiding making irreversible changes in time in the process.
With the “CHAOS SYSTEM” that we want to create, we aim to offer various game experiences so the player can complete the levels in many ways, choosing game styles that best fits their style. This element increases the “replayability” factor and the total number of game hours.
Time Wanderer starts about 1,000 years into the future, in the year 3012. Earth has been invaded by a reptilian alien race known at the Ro’tuls and the human race has been enslaved.
This is when the brilliant scientist, Dr. Fhaiz, clandestinely creates a time machine in his basement and in a desperate act, sends his only child, Corina, back into the past with one mission: warn humanity of the Ro’tul invasion and prepare the world for the coming battle.
But something goes terribly wrong and Corina gets lost in time, wandering through different time periods. Her new mission will be to survive while she searches for a way home to her own timeline and above all, avoid making permanent changes to the past to prevent causing a time paradox.
Alongside Corina, the player visits landmark moments in history, like Egypt in 40BC, Rome in the 1st century and Jerusalem during the Crusades in 12AD, discovering mysteries and secrets throughout the journey.
How long have the Ro’tuls been on Earth? Has Corina created a paradox simply by traveling back in time?
Corina is a 19 year old girl who has been forced to work on a farm camp as a slave for the Ro’tuls.
As a result, she didn’t have much of a childhood and she’s introvered and naive. She has a deep loating and hatred of her oppressors, which motivated her to accept her mission, despite the fear of the challenges that lie ahead of her.
She carries a hand sickle that she’s been using over the last 7 years with her to use as a weapon and the Ro’tul slave control chain that can’t be removed, making her appear strange and suspicious in the time periods she travels to.
Dr. Fhaiz, Corina's Dad, is a prominent scientist who has dedicated his life to studying cronotones, the particle that makes time travel possible. As a man of science, he is not forced to work in the fields like his daughter. He has been given a greater degree of freedom, allowing him to build a prototype of a time machine in the basement of his residence.
The problem is that someone is needed to operate the machine, and that someone can only be him since no one else knows how to operate it. He’s forced to ask his only child to risk her life to use the machine.
Dr. Fhaiz thinks it’s a simple mission: go back 26 years to tell one of his friends about the coming Ro’tul invasion. Unfortunately, the machine doesn’t work as expected and the simple mission becomes an odyssey through time.
Dr. Fhaiz is always on the other side of the intercommunicator to help his daughter face any dangerous situations she may come across. He also has a large database that he can use to look up historical events to avoid undesired changes to the past.
The Ro’tuls are a bipedal reptilian race, the result of evolving from primitive reptilians. They have eyes and claws typical of reptilians and their backs are covered with scales.
They are approximately 10,000 years more evolved than humans. No one knows what planet or system they are from nor why they decided to invade Earth and enslave mankind.
In her time travels, Corina discovers that the Ro’tuls have been on Earth for a very long time, passing as humans, camouflaging their reptilian characteristics and taking on important roles as leaders that allow themselves the ability to take action and control the progress of events.
Many times Corina finds herself between a rock and a hard place, should she intervene and stop the Ro’tul control, changing history in the process? Or should she let events take their natural course of action? Who are the Ro’tuls? Why did they invade? These are the questions Corina has to find the answer to in her adventure.
Classic Action RPG – The game has a “top down” perspective, like the classics of the genre, where the player can use various abilities to find their way through the levels, explore them, reach new areas and defeat enemies that get in the way.
By obtaining power cronospheres, the player will be able to personalize their profile with “level ups”, using the cronospheres to upgrade their attributes, equipment or abilities, improving their possibilities in combat and exploration.
The game also offers many exploration and collection elements. There will be dozens of optional equipment objects hidden in scenes for the player to collect and equip to vary the game experience.
Time Wanderer implements a system called “CHAOS SYSTEM”, which measures the quantity of “Chaos” the player has generated in each of the time periods visited (levels).
All of the players actions, from using abilities to defeating enemies, hostile or otherwise, has an impact on the “CHAOS”. The player will be able to go about the levels in two ways: infiltrate or destroy, to reach the exit quickly or explore the level thoroughly. The CHAOS level increases with time, so the player’s actions must be thought out to not get lost in the level.
If they player completes a level with a high CHAOS value, it will cause a time paradox that will result in a comic ending and GAME OVER. We believe this system adds to the “replayability” of the game, as there will be an ending for every level as well as the real final ending, giving players more reasons to continue playing for more time.
Time Wanderer is full of puzzles, many of them with multiple ways to solve as well as a number of ways to reach the end of the level. What’s really interesting is that the battles themselves are “puzzles” as well, as many times the players will have to be creative to come up with ways to find and expose weak points, or use an enemy to open a new path, and similar actions.
Every level will have a battle against a huge boss (this can be avoided by taking a infiltration/pacifist path) that is defeated by solving a “puzzle”.
Example: With the water ray ability, Corina can use a powerful hose to push enemies into an abyss or soak them to then freeze them with an ice freeze. A frozen enemy can be pushed to block paths or even used as a counterweight for floor switches.
The game will aim to be launched on Steam and if possible, on PlayStation and/or Xbox. At the moment, a demo for the PC is ready to play. Download it here.
Please keep in mind that the game is in a very early stage of development. The demo is functional and you can try out the mechanics, but there is still much to be done: the abilities only work in puzzles, not against enemies, there is only one AI for the enemies (search and attack) at the moment and the actions cancel each other out because they are not all coordinated. If you have any issue playing the demo, you can push the RESET button in the upper left-hand corner to restart in the room you are in.
1) $15,000 – We release the complete game by Q4 2017
2) $50,000 – Time Wanderer will offer 7 large levels situated in different places and times in human history. Another 7 levels have been thought up and designed, but for budget and time reasons, we have been forced to cut from the final version. If we reach this goal, more than triple the first goal, we will create the vanilla game with 10 levels and another 4 as downloadable content.
Risks and challenges
Why we are seeking funding
The amount requested is quite low for a project such as this one, one that is the result of our passion for videogames and storytelling and that has required a lot of time and effort.
The only thing we are looking for is motivation to continue moving forward. Without support and recognition, it’s complicated to enter into the market. For this reason, we’re hoping for a moderate success story that puts our game into the spotlight, allows us to get the Greenlight from Steam and to pay a few living expenses while we finish developing the game.
Other smaller expenses exist, like the purchase of software licenses and an investment in marketing.
The only risk / challenge we think we could face is to not be able to obtain the Steam Greenlight. In that case, we will try to invest in a marketing campaign that improves our odds, or to seek a publisher partner to release the game with.
Also, a low reception of our game may delay our estimated release, mainly because we will be busy with other jobs, but we are determined to release the game no matter what.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
