About this project
1933: A Nation Divided is the first volume in a multi-part series of booklets concerning the history, causes, and factions of the late Second American Civil War of 1933-1939, aimed at the layperson with an interest in recreating the experience of the war on the tabletop or via roleplaying. Inspired by and with the kind permission of the creators of "1938: A Very British Civil War," 1933 considers the matters of the war, boils them down to their most essential elements, and presents them in a format that can be used for the miniatures rules or roleplaying engine of one's choice, rather than being tied to a specific system.
Information includes photographs of historical personalities and vehicles, recreation of historical flags and posters by noted artists Darrin Lauritzen and Patty McPancakes, extensively researched articles regarding important elements of the "Early War Period" (1933-1935) with a particular focus upon the Ohio River Valley Theater, and scenarios based upon the historical engagements therein. While the scenarios are targeted at a skirmish/large skirmish level, they could easily be scaled up or down at the reader's preference, or incorporated, like most of the rest of the materials, in roleplaying campaigns.
This Kickstarter will fund the production of the first volume, as well as the beginnings of a miniatures range to be produced by Black Army Productions. Stretch goals include an additional volume ("A Guide to the Armor of the Second American Civil War, Volume 1"), full color prints of the propaganda posters contained therein, additional miniatures, and the inclusion of our rare, but beautiful, Mark VIII "Liberty" tank in 28mm scale, at more than 7" long sculpted by Jan Huybrechs!
Shipping will be free in the United States, with a small add on fee for backers outside the US. If you back at a level that does not normally have a shipping cost associated, and wish to do add-ons, we'll work that out at the end of the campaign:)
Thank you kindly for your support!

Risks and challenges
The main obstacles to tackle will involve ensuring that the books and miniatures are produced in a timely fashion. While we hope very much for an early 2014 delivery date, we can't absolutely guarantee that. Metal shortages happen, printers send proofs weeks later than they promise, molds break in the middle of spins, and 3d Printing services can vary greatly in delivery time and sometimes, even quality. Nevertheless, we remain confident that this project is very doable, and will be completed in a timely fashion.
Unlike our previous project, Divided Republic, this is not a board game and we are not acting as a proxy for the publisher. We are publishing the materials and doing the marketing ourselves. This does reduce our overhead, and it gives me more freedom, as the designer, to see what I am envisioning come to life and ensure that I am "kept in the loop" at every stage of the process. In respect to the challenges of publishing a booklet and producing miniatures, we've done both things before, so we are returning to familiar ground here. Fictional histories written as fact ? Open system sourcebooks? They've been done before, and I am confidant that the growing fanbase for this genre will assist us in getting out the word.
If course, it means that all the packing, shipping, and delivery will be our own responsibility this time. However, that isn't a bad thing. More work in exchange for complete creative freedom and product control? Yes please!
Incidentally, I am pleased to say that, at least on our end, our fulfillment of Divided Republic was a success. While the publisher is still working out a few wrinkles, the game has been well received, and I hope to return to board game design in the near future. Nevertheless, the experience was neither easy nor absent of drama, and I can only say that the challenges thereof made us better prepared for what what to do and what not to do with launching and supporting our own Kickstarter project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
