A feature-length documentary about avant-garde Los Angeles-based Stones Throw Records, its culture and its enigmatic artists
OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON (THIS IS STONES THROW RECORDS) is a feature-length documentary about avant-garde Los Angeles-based record label Stones Throw Records. Under the direction of founder and world-renowned DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has consistently released critically acclaimed, left-of-center albums since its founding in 1996.
Catalog highlights include hip-hop classics like Madvillain’s Madvillainy, Dilla’s Donuts and Quasimoto’s The Unseen. They also include retro-soul hits such as Mayer Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement and Aloe Blacc’s Good Things, Dam-Funk’s boogie-funk masterpiece Toeachizown, and the oddball works of James Pants and Gary Wilson. Drawing on live concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the folks who put Stones Throw on the map, OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON will delve deeper into the label's enigmatic artists, history, culture and global following.
For the past couple years, French filmmakers Sébastien Bauer and Lucas Blaya of MediaTV have been working to make every Stones Throw fan's dream a reality. With tens of hours of footage already shot, I've come on board to see the project through to completion. OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON will be my second feature-length music documentary - the first being Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story, which the Kickstarter community helped make happen too.
THE WORK TO BE DONE:
While I’m thrilled to have great footage to work with from the outset, there is still much to be done. In order to flesh out the Stones Throw narrative and craft an engaging portrait of the people behind it, I need to fund a number of additional shoots and production trips - many of which necessitate traveling with a multi-person production crew. Once shooting has been wrapped, I'll begin a several month-long editing process with my team. When OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON is completed, Stones Throw and I will work to bring the film to you - the fans - in whichever part of the world you call home.
Hopefully when you consider the remaining steps of the production and the expenses associated with them, it will help put our Kickstarter financial goal in perspective and encourage you to donate. Plus, in exchange for your contribution to the production, you'll receive some pretty dope rewards donated by Stones Throw for the campaign, including exclusive new merchandise made specifically for the film.
Below is a taste of some of the Stones Throw swag you can walk away with in exchange for your donation to the campaign. Among the several giveaways not pictured are the yet-to-be-completed limited edition film t-shirt and poster, which are sure to be killer!

ABOUT OUR KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN:
Kickstarter is the largest crowdfunding platform for creative endeavors of all types in the world. For a Kickstarter project to be successful, though, it must be fully funded before the end of the campaign. To Kickstart the production of OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON, I've allotted 45 days. So let's say you make a donation of $50 - that donation will be collected if, and only if the end financial goal is reached. Otherwise, you keep your $50. Simply put - if the goal of $35,000 is not reached by the end of the 45 day-long campaign, there's no money for production and the film will not be finished.
YOU are the key to the production of OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON.
Please share this on your social media networks if you feel so inclined, because greater visibility only increases our chances of this campaign being a success.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND SUPPORT!
