Pelo Malo (Bad Hair) will be an exhibit this fall 2014, and one of great importance to me, and hopefully other women around the world.
The coined phrase used in Puerto Rico and other Latin American Countries, Pelo Malo refers to women with curly hair. Although this term is not intentionally used as an insult, it is something that for many, was just embedded as a natural part of their vocabulary. Women with curly hair in these countries are often less desirable, and do not fit into an idealized vision of beauty. Yet this expectation for women to relax their hair is not one of just commercial views of beauty, it roots back to discrimination and race, and unintentionally hiding ones roots.
Pelo Malo will be a mixed media series exhibited here in London, with help of the funding it could help make this exhibit a reality. The money raised will be used towards the venue, marketing and materials.
It is A LOT of work to do, in a few months, but I am more than ready for it. If it is pulled off, hopefully the exhibit can be taken with me when I go back to the U.S and especially Puerto Rico, and grow from there.
So any donation, or even a little shout out will help me immensely! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!
Risks and challenges
This project will take a tremendous amount of work to pull off, but I have planned and already have begun production of work for this exhibit. The funding received will help in enormous proportions, and I have/will work as hard as it takes to pull off the event regardless of the obstacles that may come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
