Treasure Island is a completed, recorded, fully-soundscaped, faithful audio dramatization of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate novel. It is available as an audio download, but we are doing this Kickstarter campaign specifically to create a limited-edition run of a three-disc CD set.
Our goal of $800.00 will allow us to recoup our investment in the production of 100 CD sets, commissioning an original musical score from West Coast musician and composer Alex de Luca, commissioning special cover art from SF/Fantasy illustrator Val Lindahn, and pressing, packaging, distributing, and advertising both the downloadable version and the limited-edition CD version of the play. The funds will not go to any other Atlanta Radio Theatre Company project; and the company is a 501 C (3) nonprofit organization. If you compare the cost of adapting a book into a movie and producing the film, our financial goal is exceptionally modest!
Yet, as the co-founder of the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, the late Thomas E. Fuller, always said, audio drama can trump even the most special-effects laden motion picture—for audio drama is the theater of the mind. What an audience can imagine far outshines the best that can be thrown on a movie screen. We can put our listeners aboard the schooner Hispaniola as the rigging creaks and the gulls circle overhead. We can throw them into the midst of an intense firefight between pirates and the loyal crew. We can let them hear the raucous old sea-shanty “Fifteen Men” and the mad shrieks of Long John Silver’s parrot as if it were perched on their shoulders. The audio format can make the fictional almost tangibly real.
The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and continuing the art and craft of audio drama; educating our listeners by our productions and also by our methods of production; bringing new audio dramas to audiences internationally; and promoting and encouraging the writing, acting, and production skills of those who are interested in the field. We often draw on history for our inspiration, but our projects foresee the distant future, voyage to exotic (and sometimes impossible) lands, and take listeners to places they can visit only on the wings of imagination. This Kickstarter campaign for one of our most ambitious and successful productions we have done in our thirty-year history.
As is common with Kickstarter, our campaign will offer rewards based on the amount pledged. For a donation of $25.00, donors will receive a packaged multi-CD set of the audio production. For a donation of $10.00, donors will receive a Certificate of Thanks that can be turned into any ARTC Sales Table for a gift.
We at the Atlanta Radio Theatre are excited by this new offering. We hope the Kickstarter campaign will allow it to reach the widest audience possible! For—
