About

About Me (Skip if you get bored easily)

I was a total science nerd.  I studied biological sciences at Clemson and decided that med school wasn't my thing and took my first job after graduating as a microbiologist.  Also a romantic, I followed my heart and married my husband who was destined for infantry greatness in the Marine Corps.  Life happened and my knowledge base has grown which has opened my eyes to lots of natural alternatives to traditional products.  My husband used to call me a zealot. However, as more and more data comes out on the products/ingredients which I have excluded from our lives he has begun thanking me for my tendency to research things to death. I've lived in many parts of the country but haven't quite figured out where our final abode will be.  I do know that where ever we end up there will be my family, my pack of Plott Hounds, a greenhouse and my soap!  Hopefully, one day, I will be able to open a storefront and be able to teach future generations of soapers!

This is us and the reason for my crazy soapy quest!

The Start of My Soapy Journey

Bars by Becca was founded with love by me, Becca (haha). After a not so awesome life event I began to examine what I put on my skin (which is porous and your largest organ) in the same manner in which I approached my food. I thought that if we are vigilant about eating right why shouldn't we also thoroughly examine what we put on our bodies. My daily regimen changed as I began looking at some of my beloved products as the bad guys. In a perpetual quest for "natural", I decided to put my prior life as a lab rat to use; I donned goggles and began creating "naturally awesome" soap. Solely focused on natural ingredients, I began to create something beautiful and beneficial using only items which Mother Nature has provided. Encouragement from awesome friends was equally influential to the birth of Bars by Becca (I love you guys).

The soap is predominantly made using the hot process method so the integrity of the essential oils is preserved. They don't go through the saponification process in this method. Appearance of the soap is more rustic because of the chosen production process. Organic ingredients are used when possible and each ingredient has been chosen for its potential benefit to your skin. Batches are kept small thus ensuring the highest quality. Think "Micro Brew" of soaps. Natural soap, like Bars by Becca, retains all of the awesome glycerin which is removed during commercial soap production. Glycerin is a humectant that draws moisture into the skin which leaves your skin naturally lush and moist! My bars are artificial fragrance, artificial color, paraben, sulfate, and phthalate free. My bars are, however, tested on humans. I and the rest of my gang have throughly tested and enjoyed each batch! If you don't buy this soap, please do some research and consider making the switch to something that is natural. READ YOUR LABELS! We need to be just as cognizant of what goes on our bodies as we are of what we put in them.

Write-in Testimonials/Reviews:

"I began using Bars by Becca soaps about 2 months ago after a recommendation from a friend. I've always been hesitant about using bar soaps because I'm a staunch poof user that loves a lather! I used my new Clean Marine soap for the first time and was blown away! It lathered beautifully on my poof and it smelled subtly beautiful and not overpowering. I've also noticed how clean my skin feels. There's no residue left behind and I love that! My family will never use a different soap again. We are customers for life. No chemicals and beautiful skin is perfect for us!!!"

"I'm a middle age africian american woman and i have been using Bars by Becca since 2015. I was looking for natural products, after noticing soaps was drying out my skin. Since using Bars by Becca my skin is more moisturized. The essential oils used scent lingers longer on my body. I would recommend her products for anyone looking for an alternative to commerical products. Also she gives information on each item in her products. How awesome is that?"

Super Hopeful Evolution of My Soapy Journey

I need to preface this by saying that I am not on Kickstarter looking for a handout.  I am approaching this as way for me to have some guaranteed funds from soap sales (your pledges) to use for the new equipment rather than taking my typical route and adding one or two pieces at a time and slowly building.  I need to rapidly increase soap productivity so I can delve into new products.  More materials equals process improvement which will then lead to quicker soap production/turnaround.  All this gives me MORE TIME to add to the products offered and keep up with growing soap demand (I really hate telling clients that the bar they want is out of stock).  Ok, end of rant but I didn't want to give you a bad impression so it was a must.

Back to my journey...

After being featured on Zulily for a Veteran/Military affiliated Veteran's Day sale, my client base has skyrocketed.  As those that ordered my soap are now coming to the end of my bars they are placing orders directly through my website (www.barsbybecca.com).  I was pretty much at my maximum production prior to Zulily.  My production is limited to the soaping materials (molds, cooking vessels, drying racks, etc...) that I have and I have been unable to keep up with the demand and often run out of bars before I can restock.  My hope is to increase the necessary materials to keep up with growing demand and also add new products (bath salts, bath tea bags, sugar scrubs, etc..) that have been highly requested by my clients.

Point blank, I really just want to increase awareness of how important it is for you to be cognizant of what goes on our bodies.  I love each of my clients and try to get to know them on a quasi personal level (some share their life stories while some won't give me the time of day other to order their bars).  I never would of thought that I would be passionate about soap. Seriously, I feel silly just typing that.  In the last 2+ years I have upgraded equipment with my profits while paying myself very little (it was truly a labor of love for me).  Now, I would like to switch my system quicker than normally possible, thus Kick Starter.  Please help me to continue my journey in a more timely manner then I would do so on my own.

Below is a list of what I require to increase production and expand.  You see what I will do with addtional funds if raised.

Thanks and Other Stuff

So, I am totally out of my element here with Kick Starter.  After looking at all the amazing invention campaigns for YEARS (my favorite was the self cleaning fish tank), I never would have imagined creating my own campaign.  I am also not the type to come out and ask for money.  I love that Kick Starter is a platform for me to share my passion (soap) in exchange for monetary support.  It is a quicker (well, hopefully quicker) route for me to take to get to where I want to go.

I'd be totally stoked if you would support me and in exchange be the recipient of some soapy goodness.  My soap is AWESOME and natural and is such a labor of love for me I get teary thinking about it.  In all seriousness, even if you don't support me, I encourage you to read your labels; if you haven't already, do your due diligence and learn about what your are exposing yourself and your family to every day.  Most of all, bathe well and be well!

Thank you for reading this lengthy stream of consciousness and please consider supporting my campaign.

Until then, keep on keeping on and happy bathing!

XOXO,

Becca

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge that I have is not having enough equipment to meet my current demand. I can work smarter with more molds and actually make hot and cold processed soaps. Cold process often times has to sit in the molds for 24-48 hours (occasionally longer). More molds would afford me the ability to have a cold process batch going one day and hot process going the same or next day. I can currently make 66 bars of soap a day in the 6 molds I have. With more molds I could triple my daily output!

Another problem I run into is drying space. The drying racks that I am hoping to purchase would allow me to cure more bars (400!) in the confined space that is my soap room. As it is now, I have soap covering every surface even a bin curing on top of my printer.

Time has also become a factor for me. I spend a lot of it cutting shipping labels that I have printed with my inkjet printer and then having to take the time to adhere them to the packaging with packing tape. With the DYMO label printer I would be able to print and stick the label right on the package saving me 5 minutes per order shipped.

Finally, I want to add new products. My first goal is to add bath salts. I have traditionally made these in Mason jars but shipping those is expensive not to mention the jars can be broken in transit. To avoid this I need stand up sturdy pouches and a table top heat sealer. I also need a way to properly label the new products and have some kraft label paper on my list. This will allow me to design and print my own labels on a standard size sheet of paper and then cut with my paper cutter.

Up until now, I have gradually streamlined my process as I made profits (paying myself very little over the course of the last couple of years). What I honestly considered as a payment to myself is when I would buy items to improve my soaping process. One of my most favorite days was when I saved enough to buy my fancy cutter. Until that point I was cutting 66 bars a day by HAND! It took forever. Growing organically has worked well for me in the past. These last few months, however, I have seen growth that is hard to keep up with using the materials that I have. More materials would allow me to work smarter and harder!
