About this project
THE BONUS ROUND: HOW IT BEGAN
While we aren't sure when or where these bonus rounds were first introduced, we first noticed them in fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Art of Fighting, and King of Fighters. And man, did we love experiencing these small gold mines of gameplay.
But we wanted MORE! Future sequels only strengthened our desire to revisit these aspects of the past because these special moments have been more than often removed from current releases. Disappointment set in. When would we get to see more bonus rounds? Who would add more of these to their games?
And so it was decided on that day that we would step up to the challenge and make things right in the world. Let's make a complete game simply based on the bonus round! The Hand of Panda Kickstarter 2.0 was born.
WHAT IS HAND OF PANDA ABOUT?
The Hand of Panda is a culmination of several gameplay types combined to create an updated bonus round feel and experience. While mostly basing this game off our favorite bonus round, "Test your might" from the classic Mortal Kombat game, we decided it was time to update this and create something new and more enjoyable for today's audience.
Wrapped in an Asian theme, this game challenges you acquire the skills and power necessary destroy over 50 real and exceptionally unreal known materials: Earn the right to challenge each floor of the various pagodas to break a variety of Wood, Metal, Stone, Rare, Backer Created, and Legendary Items. The journey will test your skills of speed, strategy and memorization, while facing the various obstacles in your way and become the Greatest Master the land has ever seen.
WHY START ON THE NINTENDO 3DS?
Honestly because we're only a couple of guys and we want to guarantee that we can complete this project on a platform we're familiar with. And as long as we have a reasonable scope we can be sure that we'll actually finish everything on time.
We've been working in the game industry for over 5 years and have established a good working relationship with our developer, who in this case will act as our publisher, as we sail along Nintendo's shores.
THE NINTENDO WII U IS IN YOUR VIDEO. HOW COME?
A major requirement to publish games of the 3DS is that you have to be a registered game publisher through Nintendo. Publishing games on the Nintendo Wii U is no different. There within lies our long term plan. Since the gameplay on the 3DS closely mimics playing on a Wii U touch screen's gamepad, when and if our 3DS version succeeds, we're on to creating an HD Version of The Hand of Panda for the home console with features the 3DS simply cannot handle. The benefit is that our publisher is registered for the Nintendo 3DS as well as the Wii U, so it works out well for us in creating future sequels.
IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE A WII U VERSION, SHOULD I SUPPORT THE 3DS?
The answer to this question is, DEFINITELY YES! If we succeed with the 3DS version, then an HD version will no doubt become our next project. And those of you that help support our 3DS version with a pledge of $15 or more will be given the Wii U version FREE OF CHARGE upon completion. Why you ask? We aren't freeloaders, and we'll use your aid and support along with the 3DS sales to help generate revenue for the HD version. We don't want to ask for money unless we absolutely need too, and since most people either have one game system or the other, we'd like to give something back to those who would actually like to play our game.
WHAT YOUR MONEY GOES TOWARD
- Nintendo's license and registration fees. This is roughly $500-$750.
- Nintendo's game testing. Around $1200 to fulfill their requirements.
- License fees for the music score. Can end up being $150-$300, possibly more.
- Remaining animation costs. $500-$750, hopefully more since she deserves it.
- Backer Rewards: Tee shirts, posters, soundtrack, etc
WHAT OUR MONEY GOES TOWARD
- Publisher Costs. Way above $3,000, but let US worry about that.
- Current animation and website costs, font & graphic related expenses.
- Defending the office from random ninja attacks.
- Travel expenses and feeding ourselves in order to complete this game so we don't die.
- Paying for the initial creation of backer rewards.
BACKER REWARDS: Tee Shirts
BACKER REWARDS: SOUNDTRACK
CREATE YOUR OWN MATERIAL: $250 +
For those of you who want to get involved with the game making process, donating $250 or more will allow you to design the look, texture and name one or more of your own materials that will appear in game. These items can be found at the Legendary Golden Pagoda where special items can be smashed til your hearts content. You'll also get special recognition in the credits for your help in designing your own material. So go crazy and design something cool!
THE WII U VERSION OF "THE HAND OF PANDA" IS MENTIONED AS A REWARD. WHY?
For any pledge of $15 or more, you'll receive the digital download of the Nintendo 3DS Version of our game as a reward and once we complete the Wii U version, we'd like to show our support to those who helped make all this possible by sending you a free digital download code for the HD version as well. Granted, the Wii U version will be about a 7 months to a year before it'll end up in your hands simply because the 3DS comes first!
Risks and challenges
For a scattered three-person team, Hand of Panda has come along way! While we are up to the challenge in finishing this project quickly, its certainly possible that things can slip as we work full time jobs to cover the expense needed to wrap up this project.
And while unexpected barriers always pop up in game development we're prepared to deal with whatever comes our way. We've worked on games before, and this project will be no different.
However, if we don't receive the full funding amount, a lot of the work that we've planed to pay others and our publisher to help with, will of course fall on us. Although this won't damage the overall design or game experience, this will result in a longer development cycle.
Funding this Kickstarter will indefinitely speed up the process to ensure that we can deliver the project as close to our projected completion date as possible. Once we can secure everything to pay our collaborators, we can focus on finishing the game and getting it into your eager hands! Then onto the Nintendo Wii U!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
