To Whom It May Concern:
We would like to share about our struggle to get to the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in hopes that you will do what you can to help.
Slam poetry is a form of performance poetry that occurs within a competitive poetry event, called a “slam,” at which poets perform their own poems that are judged on a numeric scale by randomly selected members of the audience.
Each year, ACUI produces the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) offering an opportunity for campuses with new or existing Poetry Slam programs to compete for top honors and to share their artistry and voices. Participants are enriched by sharing poetry, embracing the value of inclusivity, and supporting a program in which “Everyone’s voice is welcome.”
Last year the competition was in California which made it relatively inexpensive. Not to mention an extremely generous donation for registration. This year we haven't been so fortunate. Not only is the competition in New York, New York, which will call for hefty travel expenses, but registration is higher than it's ever been.
Because slam poetry and S.P.E.A.K. (the on-campus organization that sends the team) is very new to the San Francisco State community, the opportunities for funding are limited. The school won't even pay our registration. That's where you, our family, friends and colleagues, come in.
Attached is a breakdown of projected expenses. Not only do we want to raise money for our trip, we also want to demonstrate to the San Francisco State community how prevalent Slam/Spoken Word is in the Bay Area and that they should provide the funding to include San Francisco State in that community.
You can donate specifically to our registration costs (due February 28th) at this url: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/192470382/send-sfsu-to-cupsi
Feel free to ask whoever gave you this letter how you can donate to our other expenses as well. We will take whatever you can share. Every single dollar, kind word and good vibe counts.
If you have any questions or other ideas about how to raise money feel free to email us at email@example.com.
Thank you for listening.
That's all we ever really needed.

Risks and challenges
With our registration approaching fast, this is a very imperative time for our organization. Getting that paid will give us a huge leg up and will ensure our spot in the competition. We have committed to funding everything else through community events and other tactics. We will NOT GIVE UP. We will represent our school, and our community no matter the circumstance. Believe in us, because we believe in ourselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
