What's This All About?
Central Florida has a lot going for it: theme parks, diverse cultures and communities, sandy warm beaches, and year round golf. Yet, it lacks something very important... A Board Game Cafe!
The Game Shelf aims to be Central Florida's premier board game cafe. The Game Shelf will provide an immense library of board games, a diverse menu of delicious food that caters to many diets, a clean and inviting atmosphere, and amazing value.
What's The Menu Like at The Game Shelf?
Every dish at The Game Shelf has been crafted so that it can be eaten while playing games. This means that classic dishes, like Chicken and Waffles, take on a whole new look and feel.
Our menu offers items that cater to all dietary preferences and restrictions. Gluten free? Enjoy a plate of Antipasto Salad Sticks.
Vegetarian? You need some Baked Brie Bites with pear paste and roasted walnuts. Oh yeah, there's pineapple-apricot preserves on the side.
Looking for an old classic? Try a plate of Reuben Egg-rolls with 1000 island sauce on the side.
Looking for a refreshing light snack? You need some Feta Melon Kebabs.
Now, What About These Board Games?
When some people think about board games they instantly envision Parcheesi and Monopoly. These games are classic and tug hard on our nostalgia strings. However, the board game industry has boomed in the past several years; in fact, board game related companies made $12.9 Billion in 2009. The revenue and interest has only increased.
Board games are no longer cheap toy store trinkets that occupy a rainy afternoon until someone inevitably flips the table, tossing paper money and plastic hotels to the ground. Board games have evolved into full-fledged activities. Groups across the nation meet for weekly game nights. Conventions, with attendance in the tens of thousands, allow for days of nonstop board gaming.
The problem is, board games are EXPENSIVE! Settlers of Catan, one of the most popular games of all time, costs $42.00. If you buy it because Wil Wheaton said to and your game group hates it, you can't get that $42.00 back.
So, the extensive library at The Game Shelf offers patrons an opportunity to play as many games as they wish for as long as they wish for the nominal cost of $5.00.
Do I Have To Pay $5.00 Every Time I Visit?
Many people have asked why we have a cover charge to check out our games. Hopefully this video will help clear that up:
Where is The Game Shelf Located?
The Game Shelf is negotiating with realtors and representatives of Lakeland's Downtown area. We have a location that is fantastic and ideal! It is our hope that we will be opening our doors this summer! We will update backers and followers on these goings on as we get more information.
Why Are You Raising Money Through KickStarter?
Some people just don't understand the potential Central Florida, specifically Lakeland, has to offer. In fact, when mentioning this project to some we are instantly given raised eyebrows and knowing headshakes . "It's a dull place." "No gamers live there." "No one in that area will get it." These are all things we have heard from various naysayers.
Those negative folk may be right. But, we're just to stubborn to listen. KickStarter gives us an opportunity to prove those folks wrong and let the future patrons of The Game Shelf show how much Central Florida wants, nay needs, a Board Game Cafe.
KickStarter allows us an opportunity to get objective facts and figures that gauge community interest on our project. These numbers, in addition to the funds raised here, give us the definitive proof potential investors or banks will need to help us accrue any remaining funds we may need to finalize The Game Shelf.
What Do I Get When I Pledge?

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for The Game Shelf is not finding our target market.
Board games have become a very lucrative field and restaurants will always be able to stay afloat. However, if the community doesn't know about The Game Shelf, it will fail.
To ensure that we do not fall into obscurity The Game Shelf will be highly active on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). We will also be contributing to the board game community at large by posting reviews, interviews, product demos, event announcements, and other content on YouTube and BoardGameGeek.com.
These activities will ensure we are known throughout the internet. However, YouTube videos do not ensure a local presence. So, to help remind the community of Central Florida of its premier board game cafe, we will have daily menu specials and host bi-weekly events.
The specials will allow guests to try new items that will vanish at the end of the day.
These events will vary from simple tournaments to store wide games involving soft-dart guns.
There will always be something going on at The Game Shelf.
Also, The Game Shelf will be the Independent Game Alliance's Florida leadership home base. We will host designers, publishers, and enthusiasts of board games that are currently and constantly contributing to the collection of cardboard celebration we call board games.
We'll also have access to games that are yet to be released, for demo purposes. Granting even the most jaded gamer, with a collection unrivaled, access to games they cannot find anywhere else.
