Hello! My Name is Astin Stratoti!
I am in my final year at Montserrat College of Art pursuing an interdisciplinary arts degree with a focus in puppetry. I have been involved in theater my entire life, working to build costumes, props and puppets for a variety of productions. I have been specifically studying puppetry and puppet theater for about a year and a half now, and now it is my turn to take the stage. As part of completing my degree, I am writing, producing, and performing my own original puppet show!
The puppet show will be inspired by Antoine De Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince”, a story that has meant a lot to me throughout my life. This is a story of a pilot who was stranded in a desert and the little prince that he meets that changes his life. It is a story that celebrates creativity, passion, and the timelessness of the human spirit.
The show will include a cast of 15 or more handmade puppets performed by myself and 3 other performers, an original soundtrack (created by the very talented Rik Lloyd ) and a story that will enchant and inspire people of all ages.
I will be taking on 3 underclassmen to help them to fill their internship graduation requirement. They will learn how to build a variety of puppets for stage productions, how to perform a variety of puppets on stage, and learn about and experience how a show is developed (from script to concept to fabrication).
There will be 3 to 4 shows (depending on venue availability) that will be held in April and May, 2018 in beautiful Beverly, Massachusetts (about 40 minutes north of Boston).
Your funding will be going toward acquiring materials to build the cast of 15 or more fully unique and magical puppets, supplies to build a durable and fantastical traveling set, and pay for any fees that venues require to hold my performance there.
As of right now, I will be funding the entirety of this endeavor on my own. (I have submitted my show to receive partial funding from the Beverly Culture Council, but that funding is not guaranteed.) That’s where you come in! I am currently a full-time student who works two jobs, any little bit helps! With any funding you are able to give, you will receive a reward and my eternal thanks to boot.
All donors will be given access to an exclusive production blog where I will be detailing the creation of this production as well as posting a video of the final performance. Each donor will also receive personal invitations to attend performances.
What Your Funding Will Be Used For
Your funding will be going toward acquiring materials to build the cast of 15 or more fully unique and magical puppets. Materials include various types of fabrics, foams, glues, wooden and plastic structures among other items.
It will also be used to acquire supplies to build a durable and fantastical traveling set. The set design currently includes a very large backdrop, various sand dunes, portable lights and sound equipment.
If this project raises MORE than the goal, all funds will be applied to the production and the venues that it will be performed in. Your funding would insure any and all venue fees for renting and clean up would be paid.
I hope you will consider helping this show come to life!
Risks and challenges
As I said above, as of right now, I will be fully funding this endeavor on my own. (I have submitted my show to receive partial funding from the Beverly Culture Council, but that funding is not guaranteed.)
As part of earning my Bachelor's of Fine Art degree at Montserrat College of Art, I have to complete a thesis show project. I will be following a strict production schedule with the help of 3 underclassmen interns, earning class credit for all 4 of us along the way.
As someone who has an extensive history with being involved in theater productions and is familiar with the potential risks and set backs most performances undergo, I have full confidence I will be able to see them coming and overcome them.
If my Kickstarter goal is not reached, the project will continue on. The show will have to be downsized and not as many production, performance, and reward opportunities would be available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
