HI THERE, MY NAME IS GABRIEL SEVERN...
I've been playing bass since I was 7. I'm 13 now and ready to make my first studio recording. One of my earliest memories is sitting in the back of my Dad's car, listening to bands like Weather Report, the Yellowjackets, and Steps Ahead. I remember hearing the bass lines popping out at me and I loved the sound. For as long as I can remember, there was always music being played in our house and when we'd go to festivals and concerts, I'd always notice the bass players. My mom even made me a toy upright bass out of cardboard and drew on it with a sharpie. When I was 5, my dad came home from a flea market with a half-size electric bass. It was very cool and I'd noodle around on it, but when I turned 7, I asked for real lessons. Four months later I joined a Motown tribute band from a local music school and did my first gig with them a couple months after that. I've been gigging ever since.
BASS IS THE PLACE
I've always liked creating melodies on my bass. Most people don't think of the bass as a melodic instrument, but I do. My favorite bass players broke the mold of what a bassist is 'supposed' to play. Guys like Jaco Pastorius, and Victor Wooten. But I still love the old school players too, like Chuck Rainey and James Jamerson.
I also love Latin Jazz. It can be so soothing and melodic. The Brazilian bossa nova is one of my favorite styles, so one day last year, I started writing a melody on my bass with a bossa nova groove. My Dad helped me a little bit with putting it together and it became my first tune. My god sister's 8th Birthday was coming up and I decided to write it as a gift to her. Her name is Serafina and because it's a bossa nova tune, I gave it a Portuguese name and called it "Canção Para Fina" or "Song for Fina."
People seem to like it, so I've decided to have it be my first thing I record. Although I've done lots of gigs and videos, like the one below that Bass Players United shared on Facebook and was seen by over 62,000 people, I've never actually done a real studio recording.
PROJECT GOALS AND REWARDS
I do have my own band called Teen Town, but because this song needs a different musical line-up, I'm branching out on my own. I'm not old enough yet to work and self-fund a project, so I was thinking maybe I could make this happen with your support?
I had the opportunity to jam with some of my musical idols when I performed at the 2018 NAMM Show. I also met and jammed with musicians who have now become some of my favorites. Guitarist Dario Chiazzolino is one of those musicians. I loved his playing style and thought, "He'd be great on my tune!" The good news is, Dario's agreed to collaborate with me on this project and I am so excited! If I can fund my Kickstarter project, Dario and I, along with a latin drummer/percussionist and some other musicians will hit the studio and record "Canção Para Fina." If I raise more than my target goal, then I'll record more songs and release a whole EP!
I've been really lucky to have the Markbass company and Ernie Ball Music Man support my musical journey with their awesome gear. They've also given me special performance opportunities, like at 2018 NAMM and the 2018 Dallas International Guitar Festival. And both companies are helping me with my campaign by offering cool rewards for backers, including buttons and wrist bands.
I'm so grateful for their help AND even more so for YOUR support!

Risks and challenges
As with all products, there could be production delays. However, I'll keep everyone updated throughout the entire process. I'm hoping to release my music the way I envision it. I love sharing my music and can't wait to share this project with you all.
