Young and the Dead: A Kids vs Zombies 80s Adventure
A 1980s themed kids vs zombies action/adventure comic in the spirit of The Goonies and Night of the Living Dead.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, April 10 2019 6:59 AM UTC +00:00.
Greetings! I'm Scott Serkland of Serkworks Art Labs. I've been hard at work on my original creator-owned comic book series Young and the Dead: No Zombies Allowed, a kids vs. zombie adventure story set in the mid-1980s.
If you enjoy action, humor, suspense, mystery, 80's nostalgia, zombies, or movies like The Goonies, ET, Monster Squad, or more recently, Stranger Things then I think you'll love Young and the Dead.
With this Kickstarter, I'm debuting issue four, the latest chapter in the series as well as reprinting the first three issues in the saga. Each issue is 24 pages (no ads). And I plan to offer tons of cool extras as part of this Kickstarter campaign.
This has been my personal passion project for a long time, and I'm excited to continue the story in a big way here on Kickstarter. My hope is that you will love reading Young and the Dead as much as I loved creating it.
Young and the Dead follows the adventures of 11-year-old Sam Young and his little brother Tad, who wake up one morning to find that most of the adults in their quiet suburban neighborhood have fallen victim to a nasty virus that has transformed them into flesh-eating zombies. Together, with a rag-tag team of neighborhood misfits: Sam's wisecracking best friend Mitch, a live-action role-play aficionado named Lloyd, a tough as nails tomboy named Oxsana, Sam's secret crush Stephanie, and her overprotective older brother Ricardo, aka Rocky. It's a race against time as these unlikely heroes fight to survive and unlock the clues to a cure that could possibly reverse the effects of the deadly zombie outbreak and save the world in the process.
Issue four continues the journey of our heroes who find themselves trapped inside a video arcade surrounded by a horde of hungry zombies. Can they retrieve the data that holds hope for the cure and escape with their lives? Those questions and more will be reviled!
Young in the Dead is an homage to all the great kid-centric adventure films of the 1980s. Films like The Goonies, Monster Squad, Explorers, and ET The Extra-Terrestrial, to name a few. Think Goonies meets Night of the Living Dead. Young and the Dead combines 80's nostalgia, adventure, humor, horror, mystery, and danger, and throws in a healthy helping of zombies (You all remember the zombie apocalypse of the 1980s, right?) There will be thrills, chills, and guts will spill (mostly zombie guts)!
If you would like to purchase additional add-ons just add the total amount of your add-ons based on the prices listed below. At the end of the campaign when you receive your survey you will be asked which particular add-ons you wanted to be included in your pledge and the will be delivered to you along with your base pledge. Add-ons are available to all tiers $15 and up.
The campaign will conclude on Tuesday, April 9th. If successful (fingers crossed), I will send out a survey to all the backers to get feedback on extras and add-ons. According to my sources, it takes about two weeks to receive the funds from Kickstarter, which should work out well because I'll be attending an out of state design conference April 11th and may need the following week to recover at which point I hope to have the funds and will send the comic out for printing, as well as printing for any stretch goal items and ancillary printed rewards. It may take three to four weeks to get all the printed material back. In the meantime, I plan to finish any remaining original sketches. Once I have all the books etc. back from the printer I will start packing up the rewards and send them out to all of you fine people. If you are in the US, it may take 7-10 days for the US post office to deliver your packages. If you live outside the US, I am told that it could take up to a month. With any luck, everyone should receive their rewards before the end of June--hopefully a lot sooner.
One thing we aspiring evil geniuses like to do is refer to ourselves in the third person, so here it goes...
Scott Serkland was once a mild-mannered illustrator and designer. That is until the effects of an unfortunate incident involving a microwave oven and a can of processed squeeze cheese changed his life forever. Now Serkland burns the midnight oil in his underground factory/laboratory creating robots, aliens zombies, and other imminent threats to humanity in his never-ending quest to take over the world.
Serkland soon discovered that world domination is a lonely business so he formed Serkworks Art Labs in order to help like-minded would-be world conquerors achieve the same level of success. In doing so, Serkworks Art Labs has introduced a line of geeky mad science themed products including inspirational art prints, evil genius apparel, lab experiments, and Serkland's own original comic book series Young and the Dead.
Risks and challenges
Barring an actual zombie apocalypse, there are very few risks. That being said, there are challenges in everything we do in life, but I’ve done everything I can to minimize the risks of this project. All four books are complete and ready to go. I just need your help to cover the printing. The stretch goals and ancillary items are finished or very near completion (some of these items need to be printed as well). I have run a successful Kickstarter before and delivered all rewards ahead of schedule. In addition, I have been a creative professional for over 20 years and I pride myself in always meeting deadlines and delivering products in a timely fashion. I will keep everyone in the loop with updates both here on Kickstarter and my various social media platforms. I tried to leave ample time for printing and shipping, but unfortunately, these matters are not completely under my control. But, if everything goes according to plan, you will get your books earlier than anticipated!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
