Nearly three years ago I was asked to play for a military memorial service at a naval base near San Diego, CA to honor 17 Navy SEALs who had been killed when their helicopter was shot down while they were serving in Afghanistan. My brother Nick was among the 17. Up to that point, I had been touring the country in my 1999 Ford Contour, and was performing as many shows as humanly possible in order to simply earn enough money to self-produce and distribute my first two albums.
After the memorial service, I was approached by a couple who suggested that I reach out to a friend of theirs, another guitarist and vocalist who lived in the area. The musician turned out to be internationally celebrated and three-time Grammy winning recording artist Ben Harper. Though initially surprised, I was thankful and excited to say that he took a deep interest in my music and abilities, and offered to work with me to further develop my sound and my skills.
Following our initial meeting, Ben contacted me and offered me the chance to record my third album All Is Gift in his studio. After over a year’s worth of work and several trips to L.A. in the “Red Horse”, the nickname I’ve affectionately given to my car, the ten-song album is now complete. In the music industry, a fair record label can be very hard to find, and if you do wish to pursue that route it often takes years to get your album out into the world. Through this campaign, I hope to find the support to self-produce the All is Gift CDs and then take the album on tour in a new, or rather updated, vehicle that is bit more conducive to driving around the country!
Pragmatically speaking, the more CDs I order, the less expensive it will be for me in the long run due to the bulk ordering model I will be working with. My plan is to go on a one-year tour with this album. Starting with a CD release concert here in my hometown of St. Paul on September 20th, and then traveling once again from coast to coast and border to border! I have been blessed to have had a number of international travel experiences for my music and studies, but I anticipate that this is going to be the greatest adventure I have taken on yet. I would be grateful and honored if you would consider being a part of it!

All is Gift is a ten-song folk album that speaks to my love for America, God and the military. The great news for anyone eager to hear it is that the album itself is DONE. Digital versions will be delivered immediately upon the end of the Kickstarter if it's successful, and CDs will be shipped out as soon as possible. You will also immediately get a digital copy of my previous album Be Still Better if you contribute $5 or more to the campaign.
What is the money going towards?
The money raised in this campaign will:
• Pay for the manufacturing of 5,000 All Is Gift CDs
• Pay for the album’s graphic design
• Pay for t-shirts and posters
• Pay for shipping supplies, postage, and labor involved in fulfillment
• Pay for a publicist to help market the album and the All is Gift tour
• Cover fees incurred by Kickstarter and similar attendant charges, including credit card processing and taxes.
Specific Cost Breakdowns
• Manufacturing 5,000 Albums: $5,500
• Graphics and busy work to put the album together: $1,500
• Shipping supplies, postage, and labor: $2,500
• T-Shirts and posters: $1,500
• Promotional Expenses: $2,500
• Amazon + Kickstarter Fees: 10%
• Taxes: Varies
To cover these costs and miscellaneous expenses (such as credit cards that don't process) we've set a goal of $17,000.
The reward levels are in the column to your right, offering things such as All is Gift, my previous album Be Still, the poster, the t-shirt, concert tickets and a lot more. Here is a look at some of them:
My hope is that we can raise more than the initial goal to pay for traveling costs so I can tour as much of the United States as possible. We have some ideas for how we’ll reward backers if the project exceeds its goal, including a free download of my other album No Other Way and an online concert exclusive to backers. We hope those can come to fruition.
Risks and challenges
When it comes to fulfillment every project has potential obstacles. Things in our campaign that might take longer than expected include producing the CDs and other rewards and shipping them to backers. However, we feel up to the challenge and nothing is going to stop us from rewarding our supporters for their role in bringing "All Is Gift" to life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
