When high school basketball coach Dinah Groshardt falls for school secretary Carly Lumpkin, the uproar reverberates from classroom to locker room, from the principal’s office to the PTA. A film about true love, tolerance, and naked basketball, LATE BLOOMERS redefines family values. A movie for everyone who believes it's never too late to fall in love.
LATE BLOOMERS is celebrating its 20th Anniversary after premiering at Sundance in 1996.
This movie was a real Cinderella story. Shot on a shoestring in Dallas with a dynamite local cast and crew, it went on to play more than forty film festivals around the world--followed by distribution in theaters, on video and on HBO. LATE BLOOMERS was covered in newspapers from The Dallas Morning News to The New York Times, and featured in numerous magazines, including Filmmaker, Premiere, and even Playboy.
"SWOONINGLY ROMANTIC" (Matt Zoller Seitz, Dallas Observer)
“AN UNEXPECTEDLY INVOLVING COMEDY” (Barbara Shulgasser, San Francisco Examiner)
“FLAWLESSLY ACTED...A SLAM-DUNK SLEEPER” (Bruce Williamson, Playboy)
We are seeking funding for a digital re-release slated for summer 2016.
LATE BLOOMERS was shot on Super 16mm film and blown up to 35mm for theatrical distribution. It was released in standard definition on VHS and later on DVD, but the original distributor never made the transition to digital.
We have an offer for a brand new digital re-release from the premiere American distributor of LGBT media and entertainment. It's a great opportunity to ensure that people will be able to see LATE BLOOMERS for years to come. However, we need to create a high definition digital version from the original negative film.
The funds we are requesting will cover the hard costs of the HD transfer and updated trailer, as well as modest legal and accounting services to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform.
The brand new digital print will debut in a special 20th Anniversary screening at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 20, 2016.
Risks and challenges
Risks associated with this project are minimal. The film is finished and has already been in distribution for 20 years. The new digital distribution offer is firm and the festival screening date is already set. The only thing we need now is your help in making this fundraising campaign successful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
