We're raising the funds we need to record and release our next EP independently. No record label, just us and our fans.

How EA Started.

How do we tell over 10 years of history without making it a ridiculously long, drawn out, exhausting, draining, arduous, strenuous, onerous, demanding and grueling story? Bullet points!

  • Ryan and Jowed met during highschool.
  • Ryan and Jowed began writing music together.
  • They added other people to the group, called it Eclectic Approach and released their first album, “Premature”.
  • Ryan and Jowed went to school in Pullman, Washington at WSU, where they played a ton of parties, wrote and recorded their second album, “Be Yourself” and met Justin, who was attending U of I.
  • We all moved to Seattle and lived happily ever after.
  •  Wait, no, that's not it.
  • We all moved to Seattle and lived in a band house where we wrote our third album, “Jump Into Life.”
  • Some people in the band decided to move on (we're all still friends) so we put up a few Craigslist ads for band members, and met Martin and Chris.
  • Regardless of Craigslist's reputation, they have yet to murder us.
  • Some really big industry people from OurStage.com were into some songs off of “Jump Into Life” and began giving us all sorts of awesome opportunities.
  • We subsequently got flown all over the U.S. and high fived a lot.
  • Did we mention that during all this time we played like a billion shows all over the place and music was our full time gig?
  • We recently started writing songs for our newest EP, and played the first single “All That It's Missing” on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
  • And, that pretty much brings us to right now. Now.

So, why record an EP? Why not an LP? What is an EP or LP?

The quick and dirty answer is an EP is a shorter album, typically 5 or 6 songs. It makes the most sense for us right now for a lot of reasons. First, it is cheaper. Life is all about learning lessons, and one lesson we learned with "Jump Into Life" is that if you spend $50,000 of your own money on an album, it takes a really, really, really, really long time to pay that off. In fact, we're still working on it. In the music industry, albums are now pretty much considered “promotional” items. Yep. All that hard work writing and recording for something you mostly give away for free. We sell a few at shows and on iTunes, but the prevalence of file sharing and music subscription services like Rhapsody, MOG and Spotify have all but demolished record sales. Are we complaining? Heck no! We love what we do, and seeing people enjoy what we do makes it totally worth it! But, there are financial realities to our situation that just don't go away when ignored.

So, to recap, first, it's cheaper. Second, our goal is to release EPs, singles and videos more often to stay relevant in the gnat-like attention span of the music industry. We released “Jump Into Life” in 2010. We've been playing most of the songs since 2009. It's almost 2013! What happened to the time?! Well, we've been busy playing shows to make money to pay off that album and put food in our bellies. I mean, our drummer Chris has lost over 100 pounds since joining our band, so we can't even afford that much food. Okay, well in truth he lost that weight before he joined our band, but just think if he hadn't! Really puts things in perspective doesn't it?

So, putting it all together, it's going to be cheaper and we're going to be able to release new content more consistently without the financial burden of an LP.

So, what are we going to use the money we raise for?

Well, we need to record the EP. That's obviously the first step. We found this totally awesome producer John Goodmanson, who is fairly legendary in the Seattle music scene. After we got done recording “All That It's Missing” with him, we couldn't wait to work with him again. Some of your money is going to help us pay him and for the studio time that we'll need.

What else?

Well, remember that old philosophical adage, “If a band releases an album but doesn't have any money to properly promote it, does anyone hear it?” The answer is, “Not really.” So, we have also budgeted money to hire a PR firm to get the new music into the right hands, or into the right ears. This is such a huge part of the equation, and the part that we didn't really understand last time around. We get it now, and we're going to do it right. We already have some great momentum and items on our resume, so we just need the financial backing to really push us to the forefront of the media so more people take notice.

And?

We need to get artwork for the CD and replicate it. That's the only way for us to be able to sell it at our shows. Many people don't realize this, but most of what bands make financially is from merchandise sales. That T-shirt, this CD... All of it adds up to us being able to continue to make music our life. So, we need to make the CD available in physical form, so when someone at a show hears a song they can't live without, they can come over to the merch booth and take it home with them.

We really can't do this without you.

This EP is going to be the one that takes us to the top. We all know it. We feel it with the buzz we have created and the songs we are writing. But we really need your support, and we wouldn't ask if we didn't mean it. For us, this band is about what is possible with persistence. So many of you have supported us from the beginning, and we see you at all the shows, smiling, dancing and singing along with us. We have stuck it out through some pretty lean times because you make us believe in ourselves. When we get amazing opportunities like playing Jimmy Kimmel Live, we know it's because of your dedication and support that we have already been able to make little parts of our dream come true. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for that. And, if you're a new fan, we want to thank you for taking the time to read this and be interested in what we do.

With your support, we're going to bring this band to a whole new level.

So, how does this Kickstarter doodad work?

It's actually pretty simple. Over to the the right you'll see a big ol' list of different donation options and their respective incentives. Want a guitar lesson? That's over there! Want a song written by us for you? That's over there too! Lot's of cool stuff actually, so take some time and read through them.

It's important to note that we only receive money if we reach or exceed our goal. Say we only raise $19,999 dollars. Well, we wouldn't see a penny and presumably they blast your money into outer space never to be seen again. Just kidding. You get it back. But, you don't want your money back do you?! Of course not, because that would defeat the purpose of this whole thing! How can we all make sure that we reach our goal? Tell your friends! We've provided the following paragraph that you can copy and paste in an email, Facebook post... whatever really:

“Hey! Have you heard of Eclectic Approach?! Wow... they are for sure my favorite band of all time. They have this hilarious Kickstarter video, and they all seem like just about the coolest guys you could ever imagine. You can check out their Kickstarter here: (insert link)

Let's help them reach their goal!

You want to get lunch this week?”

Okay, well you don't have to use that exactly, but you get the point. Help us get the word out there!

Even if you can only donate $1, we want you to know that we are unbelievably appreciative. The money is just a tool for us to create more of what we believe in. Seeing lots of people as “backers,” regardless of how much they gave, is the real reward.

What else do we have to say for ourselves?

We have set up this Kickstarter to fund the bare essentials for this project. It seems like a lot of money, and it is, but recording music and shooting music videos is unbelievably expensive, even when you try to do it as cheaply as possible. We set our initial goal to reflect this, but we have our fingers crossed that we raise more than that.

Any money we raise over our initial goal will be used for more PR, promotion, touring costs and future music projects.

Here are some other videos that we have done in the recent past. We hope you enjoy them!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The biggest challenge we face is time. There is very limited time to write and record while still touring enough to pay the bills. Fortunately, we have gotten better at managing all of the demands of being a full time band, and have set up our schedule to enable us all to write and work on music in a effective manner. This usually involves splitting into smaller groups, which allows us to work on multiple songs at the same time.

Over the years, we have become very good at planning, so at this point we have all of our goals lined up in front of us, and we only need the money to start the domino effect.

Thanks again for checking this out! Feel free to contact us with any questions!
