“I got dressed by myself.
I’m a big kid! I’m three!”
~ Excerpt from "Three!"
A Little History
Last year, inspired by my very curious and energetic twin two-year-old boys, I decided write and illustrate my first children's book, "Two!". I reached out via Kickstarter and Social Media to raise funds to publish this funny little board book, and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support – "Two!" was 102% funded in less than 30 days!
What started out as a little project (originally meant as a birthday gift for my boys) has grown into something bigger than I ever expected! In the past year, I've taken "Two!" to Amazon, brick-and-mortar stores, on television, and to one of the largest Children's Book Festivals in North America. With all of these efforts and the support of friends and family, I am pleased to announce that I will be printing a second edition of "Two!"
But that's not why I'm here....
My Twos grew!
While life was flying by in a blink, those curious two-year-olds of mine turned into even MORE curious (and imaginative!) three-year-olds. What had seemed like a tornado when the boys were two turned out to be... more like a minor dust storm. As it turned out, I hadn't seen nothing yet!
Thus, "Three!" was written to celebrate the imagination, unbridled passion and budding autonomy of three-year-olds (sometimes with a wink, and sometimes with a smile).
What is the campaign for again, exactly?
I have created this 30-day Kickstarter campaign in order to raise the funds necessary to publish "Three!". Much like last year, the full manuscript is complete and has gone through the first rounds of editing. I expect to make more editorial tweaks as I illustrate - up until "Three!" goes to print. The $3,000 covers costs associated with:
* Purchasing an ISBN number and bar code
* Printing 1,000 board books
* Shipping the books to the U.S.
* Packaging & distributing pre-orders
Without YOUR help, this book CANNOT be published. If I can make my goal of $3,000 in 30 days, "Three!" will be printed and in the hands of pre-order backers by June of 2016!
What's new this year?
Pre-orders of 5+ copies will come with at least one "Three!" toddler puzzle.
Also, I am adding stretch goals! A stretch goal is a funding target above and beyond the campaign goal of $3,000. While $3,000 will fund the book, meeting stretch goals will help me with the funding I need to promote it once it's published.
- $3,250 raised: All backers will receive one "Three!" Sticker Sheet with their preorder!
- $3,500 raised: All backers will receive one "Three!" Button & one "Three!" Sticker sheet with their preorder!
- $3,750 raised: All backers will receive one "Three!" Coloring/Activity Book, one "Three!" Button, & one "Three!" Sticker sheet with their preorder!
"Two!" was a success...
So why do I still need your help?
I should be a millionaire, right? Or, at least, a thousandaire?
If there's something I've learned out of this whole process, it's that this is a labor of love. For every copy of "Two!" I sell through a retailer, I get to keep one-half (or less!) of the retail price - and that's ONLY because I don't have to factor in the production costs. THOSE were graciously afforded to me by last year's Backers. If I had to factor in production costs, I would be making about $1 per book. At 1,000 books, I wouldn't have even made enough to do a second printing!
Knowing this means knowing that I need your support now more than ever! I need your pre-orders to get "Three!" off the ground so I can try to build on this dream. I need your warm fuzzy feelings to keep me going when I'm doubting myself. I need your presence to hold me accountable and running toward the finish line. And I need your voice to let others know that I am here, doing this thing.
Thank you for your support.
Risks and challenges
This year presents the same risks as last year, with a couple new ones.
As always, a major challenge will be working with an overseas printer. Fortunately, we already have a working relationship and a template for "Three!" established. However, this year I have decided to attempt shipping by sea to bring costs down. This means it will take longer for the books to arrive in the U.S., and I am unfamiliar with the process. In an attempt to hedge my bets, I will be shipping the pre-order books by air to make sure you receive your books by June.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
