Composer Daniel Levitan and percussionist Jamie V. Ryan are recording Dan’s virtuoso solo Marimba Suite #2. The result will be a new CD, the fifth in an ongoing series of CDs that Dan is producing of his rhythmically complex percussion music.
Recording at Kaleidoscope Sound in Union City, New Jersey, Dan and Jamie are using a special technique Dan developed to capture the full sound of a live marimba. This is marimba like you’ve never heard it before! The technique requires renting dozens of microphones and spending hours setting them up in the studio before recording can even begin. You can see how it's done in our video, and hear the resulting sound in its background music, taken from an earlier CD (Courante, from Baroque Suite, performed by Setsuko Kutsuno).
In addition to helping to defray the unusually high studio costs of this recording technique, by helping to fund this project you'll be contributing to its mixing, mastering, and CD production costs--not to mention helping to reimburse Jamie for the cost of his traveling to New York to set down the tracks, which he did over his spring break this past March. We plan to mix and master early this coming summer, and look forward to having finished CDs to send to all our supporters by September.
